    firefox problem

While I'm here I might slip in a non-Kubuntu question. I'm running Fedora Core 4, so if you can't help, I won't complain. Just asking in case there's something obvious I'm missing.

One day Firefox (version 1 point something) that used to work suddenly stopped working. Konqueror continues to work fine but Firefox refuses to connect to anything. I tried running Firefox version 2 point something (not the absolute latest) and it exhibits the same behaviour.

The proxy option on both Firefox and Konqueror say something like "direct connection to the internet"--I'm not going via a proxy whatever that is.

Is there any thing else I can try and fiddle with to make Firefox work?

    Re: firefox problem

My son has just installed the latest and greatest Ubuntu but unfortunately he has a similar problem. He can ping the net and connect with ftp, but firefox refuses to connect and he can't download any software from the package manager.

His firefox connection setting is "direct connection to the internet". Unfortunately Ubuntu doesn't come with any other browser preinstalled.

We both go through an ADSL modem connected to a router. I have an ethernet link to the router while he has a wireless connection. AFAIK it can't be the wireless card because he can ping/ftp.

    Help! Any ideas welcome...

      Re: firefox problem

This sounds like a router problem. I find it strange that two foxes on two different systems should decide to go on vacation at the same time.
But just for the hell it of it try opening a terminal and doing
      Code:
      sudo apt-get update
if your machine can connect to the ubuntu repositories then you will see a list of packages being searched. If it cannot connect you see something like: trying to connect........
at least you will know if your connection is "alive" and we can take it from there.

Edit: Alternately you can use the live cd to try out firefox on both your machines. If your connection is "alive" you should be able to surf.

        Re: firefox problem

On the firefox problem try the following:

        in the address bar enter
        about:config
        to get into your configuration

        filter on
        ipv6
        should bring up network.dns.disableIPv6
right click on it. I would change it to its opposite.

Let us know whether it was set to false or true and whether your son's setting was the same as yours. I don't know about ipv6 in australia.
