Beryl Installation

I'm not sure if this is the correct forum for this, but here goes. I've followed about 5 or 6 guides to install beryl, but the links provided always come back as 404 not found. The only guides i'm able to find are pretty old, some almost 2 years old. Is there a more recent tutorial i can use to install beryl?

I use an ATI card, but that is already running fine. I need to know how to install beryl. I have downloaded the package, but cannot figure out how to get it installed and running.

Any help is much appreciated.

Beryl is a discontinued project -- Feisty is the last version of *buntu that will offer it. Are you sure you want to invest in learning it?

For Gutsy, the desktop effects package is Compiz.

As Beryl is no longer a supported project - Compiz Fusion is the branch being developed - you may not find a lot of outside help, so keep looking through this forum. Plenty of users who had Beryl issues have posted here.

First, we need to know which version of Kubuntu you are running. The instructions are different for each.

What you want to install is compiz

Second, Beryl doesn't exist anymore, it merged with Compiz Extras, and the whole thing is now called compiz-fusion

Now, if you have Gutsy installed, compiz i pretty easu to install. Just install these packages:

compiz-kde compiz-core compizconfig-settings-manager compiz-plugins compiz-fusion-plugins-main compiz-fusion-plugin-extras emerald

that should get you all the packages you need for Kubuntu.

You run compiz (assuming a properly set up video driver) by running the command

'compz --replace'
If you need to go back to a "normal" desktop. you can hit alt-f2 to open the "Run" dialog and run the command
'kwin --replace'

Ok i've looked through all the links (cant sleep, must fix!).

I followed on in particular on the Ubuntu website, and it had me do a few things that went without error, including editing the sources.list file. I then entered a command and recieved the error below (lengthy, sorry):

Now one issue could be that the guide was for Feisty. I cannot use feisty or 7.10 (forget name), because it simply doesnt agree with my ATI card (i tried for 3 days straight to fix it, always signal out of range on my monitor). So i'm forced to use Dapper, but unfortunately this guide does not include dapper help. I'm not sure if this is my problem or not.

So i'm basically at a loss here. Not really sure what to do to get this working. I'm completely willing to do the research and figure this out, if only i can figure out what to look for lol.

EDIT: I have even tried guides that want me to use the make function, make install, etc. These never work because it never recognizes the command. The readme files say there is some lib i need to install, but i dont know how to install it. When I use ./configure i get an error saying there wasnt a sufficient C compiler in the folder.

Are you actually running Dapper? I'm not sure that Compiz Fusion will run under Dapper, but others with more experience in this will chime in I'm sure.

You were not able to find/get help with your ATI card here in the forum? I'm a little surprised if you did not - ATI and NVIDIA card issues abound.

Yes i'm running Dapper. Let me clarify. I was using Ubuntu 7.10, and was not able to get it working on my ATI card. I followed every tutorial I could find, and reinstalled 3 or more times.

I could boot from the live CD initially. Once installed, it booted up just fine. I installed all updates, then installed the restricted driver for my card. When i rebooted, I got a blank screen after the Ubuntu loading screen. So, I followed a
guide telling me to reconfigure the xserver-xorg file and was able to get back in. I figured out how to install the driver, and had 7.10 running. But, even tho i had the driver installed, for some reason it was like it simply wasnt installed. Simple screen savers acted as if there was no graphics card, and i couldnt enable desktop effects or w/e its called on there. So basically Ubuntu was tellin me the card was working, but it wasnt.

So I attempted to go back to windows after a few days of frustration. But of course, the windows cd was corrupt, so no windows. So i decided i'd come to Kubuntu, and try an older installation, Dapper. This one works, and my card is just fine, can run games etc. I'd love to go to Gutsy, but I'm a bit afraid at this point.

I tried it last night. Downloaded and burned a live cd of Kubuntu Gutsy. Popped it in, loaded in and got "Signal out of range" then my monitor just goes to sleep. If you guys can help me here, i'd be very grateful. Here are my exact specs:

NOTE: I do NOT want a 64 bit version, i'll worry about that some other time, i'm too new to linux to troubleshoot those problems.

AMD 64 X2 4600+ (2.4 mghz)
ATI Radeon x1600
2 Gigs of Ram

Currently running Kubuntu Dapper, would love Kubuntu Gutsy Gibbon. I have a Live CD for Gutsy, i'm afraid to use it but i'll give it a go.

@Warbick, there is a pretty nice script installer for the ATI proprietary driver now, that was not available when 6.10 or 7.04 came out. It is Envy, available here. I would be surprised if it did not install the driver correctly for your x1600, although I haven't tried it myself.

Is there any way you could test it -- could you cable in a spare/old hard drive just to see if 7.10 and the ATI driver would be happy on your system? I think it would work, but I appreciate your concern about the risk -- I wouldn't put my data at risk either.

Since you already found there's a problem with the Live CD, I'd make an Alternate Install CD, and install in "text mode" aka character mode. Probably you will need to configure a VESA driver for the initial work, then once you've got Firefox you can download and install Envy, and it will set you up with the appropriate ATI driver.

And, I would go for the AMD 64-bit version. There are no special display driver issues in 64-bit that I know of, any worse than 32-bit, and you'll take better advantage of your CPU.

Yep thats the exact program i used. Envy did not work. Basically when my comp was all screwed up i loaded in in safe mode (w/e its called, gives you a command prompt instead of trying to load the gui) and did sudo -reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg. Then followed the guide for a few adjustments and typed startx. It loaded, so i went to http://albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html (this includes ATI scripts also). Installed this and typed sudo envy -t and it did it all for me. Seemed like it installed, but the driver simply didnt do anything.

I started using linux about 5 days ago, so i'm in way over my head, but i'm slowing figuring it out :P

Yep, I remember. Actually I'm still trying to figure stuff out, like Samba.

That is odd that Envy didn't install your driver correctly. But, I'll take you at your word. When I first tried Kubuntu, it was on a PC that has a Radeon card -- maybe an x400. After about the 5th go-round with fglrx and xorg.conf, I decided I really needed an Nvidia card, which led to I really need a new system to put the new Nvidia card in ....

Sorry -- I just never mastered installing ATI drivers. :P

I would still give it one more go with Gutsy and Envy -- there are some hardware improvements in Gutsy, versus Feisty and the earlier versions.

Ok i've installed Gutsy (what the hey, why not) and used envy to install the driver. Booted in and it still looks exactly the same. No graphics acceleration, and my resolution isn't what it should be ( i usually run at 1440x900, this is 1280x something not widescreen) In trying to change my resolution, there is nothing past the current. I went to the hardware tab, and it said it detected an ATI card, so i selected that and it wanted me to restart X. When i did this, it boots into something saying its checking my batter (?) and some thing else, and locks up. Cant get to a command prompt, nothing. So i sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg, fix that to the 1280 res, and get back in, no graphics card running.

Whats going on? I'll post this then find my xorg file and post it for you if that helps.
