I spent hours and hours on mondo and never got a backup that would recover from bare metal. Or even restore period. Granted, I'm not the sharpest tack in the pack, but usually I manage to wear a problem out through sheer stupid stubborn.
I found that partimage was a simple and easy way to do a bare metal recovery, particularly if you have 2 DVD drives. It skips empty space. I did a bare metal restore off of a usb drive, that did take a bit of fidgeting but worked.
kdar is also nice, it's not bare metal, but you can run it in the background, and restores nicely on top of a plain jane install
