my terminal name is my user name@my ip address. is there a way to just make it my user name, without an ip address?

Could you post the contents of the file .bashrc ? In a command line, type "cat ~/.bashrc"

and no im not running live cd, this is a breezy 5.10 hd install.

You need to configure the variable PS1 correctly.
Look here for instance (or google a bit)

WARNING: if you screw up you won't be able to login. If you really want to do it, make a backup of .bashrc first. Then, edit, save, and open a new "konsole" to see if it works. Do not logout by any means until konsole opens up a shell (command line) correctly.
If in doubt, do nothing. You may render your user account unusable!
