    no sound in amarok! And how do you rip CDs in amarok?

    Yeah, this is irritating. I'm using both gnome (ubuntu) and KDE (kubuntu), but most recently primarily KDE. And I've had this problem with both GUI's. Amarok will not have any sound when I play an mp3. But when I open up rhythmbox, it plays the mp3s just fine. Does anyone know what might cause this? It doesn't happen all the time, but lately its been about 60% of the time.

    Also, for the life of me, I cannot figure out how to rip CDs to mp3s through Amarok - I'm having to use rythmbox for that as well. I'm sure it's something simple and I'll feel completely stupid when I figure it out...

    Assuming you are running Feisty (7.04) - you didn't say, then Amarok should have the following packages installed:

    Depends
    amarok-xine, ruby, python-qt3, lsb-release, kdebase-kio-plugins, kdelibs4c2a (>= 4:3.5.5-1), libart-2.0-2 (>= 2.3.16), libaudio2, libc6 (>= 2.5-0ubuntu1), libfontconfig1 (>= 2.4.0), libfreetype6 (>= 2.2), libgcc1 (>= 1:4.1.2), libgl1-mesa-glx | libgl1, libglib2.0-0 (>= 2.12.9), libgpod1 (>= 0.4.2), libice6 (>= 1:1.0.0), libidn11 (>= 0.5.18), libifp4, libjpeg62, libmp4v2-0 (>= 2.0.0+cvs20040908+mp4v2+bmp), libmtp5 (>= 0.1.3), libmysqlclient15off (>= 5.0.27-1), libnjb5, libpng12-0 (>= 1.2.13-4), libpq5, libqt3-mt (>= 3:3.3.8really3.3.7), libruby1.8 (>= 1.8.5), libsdl1.2debian (>= 1.2.10-1), libsm6, libstdc++6 (>= 4.1.2), libtag1c2a (>= 1.4), libtunepimp5, libusb-0.1-4 (>= 2:0.1.12), libvisual-0.4-0 (>= 0.4.0), libx11-6, libxcursor1 (>> 1.1.2), libxext6, libxft2 (>> 2.1.1), libxi6, libxinerama1, libxrandr2 (>= 2:1.2.0), libxrender1, libxt6, zlib1g (>= 1:1.2.1)

    Amarok uses K3b to burn audio CDs. So, you need to have K3b installed (I'm sure you do) and you need to have full mp3 support. The following packages should be intalled:

    Depends
    kdelibs4c2a (>= 4:3.5.5-1), libacl1 (>= 2.2.11-1), libart-2.0-2 (>= 2.3.16), libattr1 (>= 2.4.4-1), libaudio2, libc6 (>= 2.5-0ubuntu1), libdbus-1-3 (>= 0.94), libdbus-qt-1-1c2 (>= 0.62.git.20060814), libdvdread3 (>= 0.9.6), libexpat1 (>= 1.95.8 ), libfontconfig1 (>= 2.4.0), libfreetype6 (>= 2.2), libgcc1 (>= 1:4.1.2), libhal1 (>= 0.5), libice6 (>= 1:1.0.0), libidn11 (>= 0.5.18 ), libjpeg62, libk3b2 (>= 1.0), libmusicbrainz4c2a (>= 2.1.4), libpng12-0 (>= 1.2.13-4), libqt3-mt (>= 3:3.3.8really3.3.7), libsm6, libstdc++6 (>= 4.1.2), libx11-6, libxcursor1 (>> 1.1.2), libxext6, libxft2 (>> 2.1.1), libxi6, libxinerama1, libxrandr2 (>= 2:1.2.0), libxrender1, libxt6, zlib1g (>= 1:1.2.1), wodim | cdrskin, cdparanoia (>= 3a9.8 ), genisoimage, kdelibs-data (>= 4:3.1.4-2), kdebase-bin, cdrdao (>= 1.1.7-5), transcode, libdvdcss2
    Suggests
    k3b-i18n, normalize-audio, toolame, sox, movixmaker-2, libk3b2-mp3 << you do need this one installed

    You can use Konqueror's search apt function to check all of this. See my link on HOWTO: Search your apt-cache with Konqueror

      Snowhog. He asked about ripping CDs and I assume that he means extracting and transcoding to save as a file (mp3, ogg, etc) on his HD as opposed to burning to CD. If I install all of the above will I be able to do that? I use ogg rather than mp3. I can current rip with K3B. The only relevant choice I see in Amarok is to lad the CD and then click Playlist > Burn to CD. Currently when I do this, nothing happens. If I can make this work, I may stop using GRip as K3B is finally able to customize file and playlist names. Still need to check the tagging.

        First, Amarok is a player. You can't rip CDs from Amarok. You can, however, do so using K3b.

        If K3b is properly installed (as my list shows), then you shouldn't have any problems ripping your CDs wth K3b.

          Yes, I agree. Were you saying in your first post that the two are integrated and that you can launch K3B from withing Amarok?

            In Amarok, when you choose Playlist | Burn to CD the application that is used to accomplish this is K3b. At least, on my system, that's what happens.

              Lol guys! Yes, I am running Fiesty Fawn and the goal in "ripping" is to convert an audio CD to mp3 files for my collection. I was just wondering if Amarok had that function...it's not essential. And I do have K3b installed, just haven't played with it much.

              Do any of you have any idea why I am getting no sound from Amarok when I can get sound from Rhythmbox just fine?

                Have you verified that all the listed Depends and Suggests packages (for Amarok and K3b) I listed are installed?
