i downloaded kynaptic as a .deb file, and i get this message "the utility ar is not in your path"


also typing rpm at a terminal window comes back with command not found....its unrelated but i thought id ask and save the new thread.

Why not just do this instead?

1. Update your repositories
2.

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install kynaptic

there is something wrong with the /etc/apt/sources.list file, a bad mirror i think.

Type 'US' is not known on line 98 in source

i messed with the # placement and may have choosed another mirror, but it is working maybe now. what about the first two issues i listed though....automatic is great, but manual is still key.

That's why I asked you to follow these directions I linked to earlier (and I'm linking to them again). Follow those directions exactly as written. Do not skip any steps. Then

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install kynaptic

As the message suggests - there are dependency problems with kynaptic: namely that it needs two other packages that apt-get can't find in any of your repositories.

im not at my linux box right now, but would i try an apt-get install libapt-pkg-libc6.3-5-3.9

Is that all you're typing? Every time you change your /etc/apt/sources.list you should be doing a

sudo apt-get update

before you install anything new.

I'm not sure if it makes a difference, but you may want to put the proper spacing between your repositories. Go here and copy and paste exactly the sources.list given. Do not retype it or modify it in any way. Do not add it to your sources.list--replace your current list with the one given:

http://www.psychocats.net/linux/sources.php

That said, it's probably this line that's messing you up and conflicting with the Ubuntu repositories:

deb-src [url]http://mentors.debian.net/debian[/url] unstable main contrib non-free

It's okay to add in another repository to temporarily install an application, but once the application's installed, you should remove that repository from your sources.list and just leave the Ubuntu ones.

in the end i uninstalled most of my packages in adept by accident, so i reinstalled kubuntu. i have synaptic now that i got with adept, but i cant seem to get a hold of kynaptic. i dont see what all the hype is about really.....

before i messed up though, i was getting a lot of conflicts with libraries and apps on adept, some wouldnt install because of such and such, etc.

kynaptic isnt showing up in adept or synaptic now, sources.list to blame?

Yes, as I explained in the previous post. Use exactly what's given to you. Then do

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install kynaptic

yeah, case closed. i finally got it man. but i like synaptic much more than kynaptic. thanks for help
