    Ethernet not working properly

    Hello,

I am running Kubuntu Gusty beta on 1.8ghz Dell E1705 laptop with 2Gb RAM, 80GB HD, Intel Pro/Wireless 3945ABG Connection (eth1) and Broadcom 440x 10/100 Ethernet Adapter (eth0).

My wireless seems to be working fine since it is detecting signals from my neighbourhood (still need to test it to see if it actually will connect) but my bigger issue is the ethernet which doesn't seem to work.

I have RoadRunner cable hooked up on my desktop with WinXP Professional and when I unplug it to hook up my laptop with Kubuntu, it starts detecting network but when I open KNetworkManager it has static IP/Gateway. I tried going online and it won't work.

I am not sure if the issue is with my ethernet adapter which worked before under XP but I am running out of ideas. I also used 'sudo dhclient' but it couldn't find any working connections.

    Please help!

This is going to sound totally bogus, but what graphics card do you have?

Can you run the command "sudo apt-get update" in recovery/safe graphics mode? (i.e. does the internet work in non-gui mode [by way of ethernet]?)

ATI Radeon Mobility X1400. However it is not recognized when I installed Kubuntu so it is running in vesa mode only. My ethernet adapter appears to be properly recognized as Broadcom BCM4401 model.

I did and it still wouldn't work.

Hmmm, we'll help you get your ethernet up and running, but for now, if you would like, let's get your graphics driver installed while I research methods to get your ethernet going. Click this link for a direct .deb download of Envy; it will download and install the correct driver for you. Just click the link, download and install Envy, run it, and tell it to install the ATI graphics driver (it'll autodetect your card). When asked, tell it to automatically configure xorg.conf and reboot.

Let me know how that goes and I'll get back to you as soon as I find instruction on how to configure your ethernet.

Edit: OK, try this: with the ethernet cable connected to your computer, open SystemSettings and click "Network Settings" (should be at the bottom left); see if the ethernet connection is detected and if it's enabled. If it's detected and not enabled, click the "Administrator Mode" button on the bottom right of the window; type your password and see if you can enable the ethernet connection (with the connection highlighted, click the "Enable Interface" button in the middle of the screen). Let me know how it goes.

I tried running it through Dolphin and I got an error message "Dependency is not satisfiable: python-gtk2". I assume I need python software package before I install envy or maybe I'm wrong.

Do this, open Konsole and type "sudo apt-get -f install"; that should fix you right up It should install all the needed dependencies for as well as Envy, let me know if it doesn't

              It didn't work. I got a message:

              Reading package lists... Done
              Building dependency tree
              Reading state information... Done

I saved the file on desktop.

Try this then, open Konsole and type "cd ~/Desktop && sudo dpkg -i envy_0.9.7-0ubuntu12_all.deb" followed by "sudo apt-get -f install" and see where that gets you.

As for the ethernet, try my above comment and let me know what happens:

I tried this and it installed some additional packages from Gusty installation CD but it still reported dependency issues to install envy so it didn't. I believe it mentioned python-gtk2, python-glade2, etc. as not being installed so nothing else happened.

I'm thinking about bringing my laptop to school tomorrow and updating through my school's wireless. Maybe if I update drivers, my ethernet will work although I doubt.

As for the ethernet, try my above comment and let me know what happens:

This was the first thing I checked earlier and both wireless and ethernet are enabled. When I plug in my ethernet cable, KNetworkManager gets stuck when it acquires an IP address. Again when I plug it back into my desktop, it works fine. Maybe my laptop ethernet is messed up.

                    Re: Ethernet not working properly

I just noticed Envy icon in my System menu but when I click on it, I get some error message so I guess it wasn't installed properly.

I don't remember to be honest because it showed up only the first time I ran it. Afterwards whenever I would click on it, it would just flash and disappear. I tried running the deb file under Dolphin again and it told me to use "sudo apt-get install -f" because of the invalid dependencies. After I did that in Konsole, it automatically removed corrupt Envy installation so now it's gone.

Let's worry about Envy later. For now, try this post and see if it helps. If not, we'll try something else
