Re: modem connected but nothing works

What exectly is the make and model of your modem?

"i can view web pages in dos". Can we assume from this that you are dual booting? Just because a modem is working in (say) Windows doesn't mean that it is working in Linux. E.g. there can be a problem with winmodems

yes the system is set up for duel boot. i have not even set up windows since i have reinstalled it on the system. this modem is an older modem and it appears to be a full hardware modem.

You are sure that you are connecting in linux(using something like kppp), but the problems is that you can't browse or instant message?

Are you trying to browse using konqueror and using kopete for messaging?

kmenu -> system settings -> advanced tab -> service manager -> under startup services click the network status daemon and then, when it is highlighted, click the stop button, wait a few seconds and click the start button.

            Is konqueror now functional?

The network status daemon should be telling the system when your connection status changes, upon connecting using kppp, but doesn't seem to function correctly.

I don't know of any permanent solution so the problem may crop up again as you connect and disconnect from your isp. It is a minor inconvenience but I just wanted to make clear that you may have to get into the habit of using this solution. It isn't a one time only solution.

If you find this annoying I have never had problems with the opera web browser, only konqueror and kmail (i.e. kde applications). If you haven't tried an alternative browser, such as opera, you may want to give it a try.
