    Modem installation as fax FAILED...

    Hello.
    I'm 1-2 weeks newbie. I have installed kubuntu 7.04.

I'm trying to install for a long time a modem and use it as fax ONLY.

So I installed efax-gtk as fax program.

    1. I try to install the modem I had at windows. It was an internal Tornado with the chip INTEL DQ82536EP and I follow the instructions I found on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Di...wto/Intel536EP
So I try to use efax-gtk and I get the message:

    efax-0.9a: 02:02:16 opened /dev/536ep0
    efax-0.9a: 02:02:20 using 536EP in class 1
    efax-0.9a: 02:02:20 dialing Tnumber
efax-0.9a: 02:02:28 Error: dial command failed
    eax-0.9a: 02:02:28 failed page /home/user/Desktop/arxeio.ps.001
    efax-0.9a: 02:02:30 finished - unrecoverable error

It did the sound that opens the line. If I use /dev/ttyS1 there was an error, I think Error: sync: modem not responding.

    2. Then I find another modem from a friend. It was PCtel with the chip PCT789T-C1. I followed instructions from http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=171163 and I got a message that it was installed sucesfully. The message I got after I triend to send a fax was:

    efax-0.9a: 10:59:43 opened /dev/ttyS0
    efax-0.9a: 10:59:49 sync: dropping DTR
    efax-0.9a: 10:59:54 sync: sending escapes
efax-0.9a: 10:59:59 Error: sync: modem not responding
    efax-0.9a: 10:59:59 failed page /home/user/arxeio.ps.001
efax-0.9a: 10:59:59 finished - no response from modem

    3. I found another modem MOTOROLA and I used scanModem to find that it was SM56. I searched over the internet and I didn't find how to install it (there are some drivers at site http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/ but I don't know how to install and if those are what I'm looking for and I let it go).

    4. Last modem I have is a USRobotics, external, USB. It has the code 5633. I didn't find how to install it and I didn't try anything.

I'm kind of desperate since I need the fax. I have 4 modems and none worked.
So I put back the 1st modem who seems to be close to sending and I'll try to install it. If anyone knows how to install and what to do, instructions to a newbie, please help. If it's easier anyother modem from the list, let me know.

    Best regards...

    Plug in the usb modem.

open a console window by doing either kmenu button on taskbar/system/konsole

    or

kmenu/run command... / type konsole in command box

Then run each of the following commands in the console and paste the output in this thread

    lsusb
    dmesg | grep usb

There are no lights on the modem. Usually when I plug some USB device, there's a light on it, right?

Re: Modem installation as fax FAILED...

The modem is being recognized by the system.

Chances are that it is /dev/ttyACM0

        (that is ACMzero)

You should be able to dmesg | grep ACM
to confirm this or search for ACM or cdc_acm in the /var/log/messages file

See if you can confirm this and post the dmesg output if it shows anything.

For example you should see something like

        cdc_acm ... ttyACM0: USB ACM device

If this is confirmed then see if you can use /dev/ttyACM0 as you used /dev/ttyS1 in your earlier post.

If it doesn't work see if there is a ttyACM0 character device in your /dev directory.

If not we can try creating it.

Re: Modem installation as fax FAILED...

I hope I got it right.

I gave the command dmesg | grep ACM and I didn't get any return. Only the ~# and cursor.

Then I tried to search in the /var/log/messages for ACM or cdc_acm but I didn't find anything.

Then tried to find ttyACM0 at /dev directory and didn't find it. So didn't test efax if it works or not.

          Don't know what to do...
Tell me if you need info from file.

The messages log probably filled up with other things and it is in one of the older messages logs in that directory.

Try unplugging the modem, waiting 10 seconds or so and plugging it in again. It should be recognized again and should show up in the latest log info. Otherwise you can search in the older messages logs like messages.0, messages.1.gz (open with ark).

Yes. I checked the messages.0 and I found the following lines:

Bust still in the /dev directory I cannot find ttyACM device.
Do I need a restart to recognize it (windows speaking )?

I haven't forgotten about you, but it will probably be tomorrow before I get a reply to you. I'm busy today and I want to take time to try to get it right.

We will try to set up the dev node in my next post.

The section that talks about cdc_acm abstract control module for usb modems being registered.

Before you start also check to see if there is a /dev/input/ttyACM0 or /dev/input/ttyACM1. If so see if you can use that as the device in efax or as a device in modem properties in kppp, as described below.

If those nodes don't exist either, then do the following:

First create the device nodes of character type for ttyACM0 and ttyACM1 (sudo gives you root so you can do this)

                    sudo mknod /dev/ttyACM0 c 166 0
                    sudo mknod /dev/ttyACM1 c 166 1

next make sure there are no permission problems by

                    sudo chmod a+rw /dev/ttyACM0
                    sudo chmod a+rw /dev/ttyACM1

This gives read and write access to everyone. I was going to go through the trouble of checking for dialout group and setting owner and permissions differently but we can worry about that later if this works out.

At this point you should be able to do something like run kppp-configure-modems tab and create a new modem choosing modem device /dev/ttyACM0. Then click ok to accept choices get back out of configuration(this is important before you try to query the modem. If you try to query it immediately it won't work). Then you should go back into configure-modems tab-edit-modem-query modem button and get some feedback. If not try /dev/ttyACM1 as the device and do the same thing.

Re: Modem installation as fax FAILED...

I didn't find any /dev/input/ttyACM0 or /dev/input/ttyACM1 so I tried what you told me.

After I gave the commands, I went to check the /dev directory and found the ttyACM0 and ttyACM1 so I opened the kppp-confugure-modems tab and in the modem device box I could choose /dev/usb/ttyACM0 and /dev/usb/ttyACM1. I tried those and I couldn't get a query from modem.

So I tried out the efax-dtk just in case. I put as serial device ttyACM0 and ttyACM1 (without / or /dev directory) and I got for both

efax-0.9a: 14:38:50 Error: can't open serial port /dev/ttyACM1: Invalid argument

efax-0.9a: 14:39:08 Error: can't open serial port /dev/ttyACM0: Invalid argument

                      What's next?

Re: Modem installation as fax FAILED...

                        wonderful.

The motorola drivers are 2.4 kernel, except for a fedora option.

Let's move on to the pctel

Disconnect the USR USB modem and install the pctel.

This is an internal pci modem correct?

Once it is installed open a terminal window with kmenu > system > konsole

                        and type

                        wvdialconf ~/dial.txt

paste the output from the terminal window that shows its scanning and results.

Also this will put a file dial.txt in your home directory. Paste the results of this small file here. It should show dialer defaults, modem, baud etc.

OK. I installed the pctel modem. It's internal PCI.

The wvdialconf ~/dial.txt command in konsole window gives:

                          [Dialer Defaults]
                          Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0

Well, as I see it has ISDN. My line is PSTN. Does it matter?

As I understand the device must be ttyS_PCTEL0, right?

                            That's good news.

"Well, as I see it has ISDN."

no, the line doesn't mean that and no it doesn't matter

yes, the system is able to access the modem, send things like initialization strings and get feedback so your modem is functional.

Yes you want to try using:

                            /dev/ttyS_PCTEL0

                            in efax

If you get errors I will need to do some searching on efax issues because the modem seems to be functional.

Well, I put as device in e-fax the ttyS+PCTEL0 and I got the following results:

                              efax-0.9a: 22:43:42 opened /dev/ttyS_PCTEL0
                              efax-0.9a: 22:43:43 using PCtel HSP56 MicroModem Linux Driver K2.4.7.V92.001 (03/26/2003) in class 1

efax-0.9a: 22:45:43 Error: dial command failed
                              efax-0.9a: 22:45:43 failed page /home/user/file.ps.001
                              efax-0.9a: 22:45:47 sync: dropping DTR
                              efax-0.9a: 22:45:50 finished - unrecoverable error

Another thing to notice is that at the dialing stage, it delayed. I thought that it was dialing and waiting the synchronization by the other side. I'll again in another fax number tomorrow. I'll tell a friend to answer and press the fax receive button and tell me what it did. Did it try to connect?

I want to tell you that this error is the same with the one I got with the 536EP modem I tried. So I guess it tries to open the line.

                              What's next?
