Left/Right Tiltwheel Problem . . . [solved]

My mouse has the left and right scrolling tilt wheel technology; I've followed the instructions from this link - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/In...ForwardButtons - and set up my mouse's left and right thumb buttons, but how do I configure xorg to read the left and right scrolling buttons? Would the left and right axes be listed as "XAxisMapping" or what would the corresponding axes be?

"ButtonMapping" only seems to work for vertical scrolling, not horizontal; there are apparently some apps that allow me to scroll left and right with the tiltwheel, but not many; I have since determined that, for the time being anyway, Kubuntu (xorg rather) doesn't support horizontal scrolling, that is, unless you have configured it to work.

you should have something like this:

remove Option "ButtonMapping" "1 2 3 6 7"
remove Option "Buttons" "7"

The particular configuration you suggested doesn't work with my mouse, I have a Dynex DX-LM100. I would like to try a number of the other configurations listed on that wiki, but my system doesn't respond well to the "evdev" driver, in fact, X doesn't load at all. I tried messing around with similar configurations using the evdev driver about a month ago on Feisty (I'm currently using the Gutsy beta), and had the same result. Is there anything you can think of I can do to get the evdev driver to work?

you could use the help of

sudo Xorg -configure

- this has to be run after you log out, press Ctrl-Alt-F1 and

sudo /etc/init.d/kdm stop

it will create an example xorg.conf in your home directory, we need this to see if you are missing something important in your mouse xorg.conf section; after "sudo Xorg -configure" run "sudo /etc/init.d/kdm start"

we are only interested in mouse section; backup your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and change Section "InputDevice" to:

Edit: Well, that didn't work so well; I could left and right click, and scroll up and down, but not side to side, and my thumb buttons didn't work. While scrolling up and down, somehow it would trigger the reload button in Firefox and that sort of stuff. I've reverted back to the old config. What next?

Still off target; the tiltwheel doesn't work at all, and neither do the thumb buttons. It's been a little while since I've played with the configuration, but it seems like the left/right tiltwheel buttons were recognized as 6 & 7 when I had xorg configured with Option "buttons" "9". I just settled with "7" because I could navigate back and forward through Firefox that way. Does this info make any kind of difference? (Don't worry, I'm very patient with these things, as long as my left and right buttons remain functional )
