    firefox sound prob

Ok, i've tried EVERYTHING i've found on this forum and other to get sound working with firefox, with out anything thing else using sound running (that i know of)

this is what it says it the console when i run firefox as root (with flash plugin V 9) and goto youtube to watch anything. ::::

I gave me screen after screen of this... i think it's just looping while the vid was playing and i didn't wanna flood this with too much, but any idea's?

And YES sound works with everything but my net browers (firefox and konquerer)

if it's easy to get it working in konquerer I'll just use that for anything that needs sound but from what i've seen it's hard for most people to get sound working with browers in general i've seen so many posts saying the same couple of things bout firefoxrc, or the same problem but on other browers... What's wrong with internet sound and linux?!

    Re: firefox sound prob

It's odd that sound seems to work, except in browsers -- I don't recall hearing that particular problem.

If it were me, I'd pretend it's all broken, and start here:

    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449

If it's true that the ALSA drivers and utilities are all installed and working right (i.e. Amarok plays all file formats), then it's probably something to do with browser plugins/add-ons.

      Re: firefox sound prob

Yeah, i've installed ET and not even had the problems people said about needing root or anything, and yeah VLC and Amarok play music great, I haven't got the mp3 support for it, but I can... i just don't think that will help, i've also tried all of the audio devices i can... (ie, system settings/sound system/hardware tab)
      I've got:
      autodetect
      Open Sound System
      Advanced Linux Sound Architecture
      No Audio In/Out
      Enlightened Sound Deamon
      Network audio system
      Threaded Open Sound System

None of them seem to change anything really, the media players still work with all of them and the browsers don't. I'm really clueless at this point. I really did for about a minute and a half considered using windows 98 SE again... and I really hate windows.... hate it with a passion.

Now, i might try a new sound card, if i can get my hands on one, because i've read a post about someone having a similar sound card as me and switching it out and having everything work fine, but NONE of his sound was working before he changed cards...

If you have functioning sound *except* when in the browser, it isn't the sound card. Much more likely, is the format of the file you are clicking on in the browser. What site are to going to, and what file format are you trying to play?

One easy thing to try is to enable the Medibuntu repository and get those non-free codecs installed. Might help, might not, but it's cheap and easy to try. Paste the applicable lines from the web site into a Konsole window, one at a time, then open Adept Manager and hit "Fetch" and you'll be in business:

well, it was youtube, but here is something....

under lspci -v this comes up:

00:0b.0 Multimedia audio controller: Ensoniq ES1370 [AudioPCI]
            Subsystem: Unknown device 4942:4c4c
Flags: bus master, slow devsel, latency 32, IRQ 5
            I/O ports at a400 [size=64]

            and aplay -l gives this:
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
            card 0: AudioPCI [Ensoniq AudioPCI], device 0: ES1370/1 [ES1370 DAC2/ADC]
            Subdevices: 0/1
            Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

            Subdevices: 1/1
            Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

and sudo modprobe snd- (tab tab) gives this:

I've been doing that one, because it's all about sound really, so when it works, i'll know it, but myspace music doesn't work too.

I should have the flash player 9 from their website, and I thought I installed it right...
I've also changed firefoxrc to aoss like so many posts say to... I'm really just stumped at this point.

Yeah, now I'm getting a busy sig from ET when I start it.. so sound went out on that now too, i remember reading somewhere how to kill all the arts running, would that help if it's saying the device is being used? (ohdamnit i wish i could remember how)

But I will check that howto. Hope it helps.

Yeah, I'll be doing that later, but this is what enemy territory is doing with sound normally...

                          ------- sound initialization -------
                          /dev/dsp: Device or resource busy
                          Could not open /dev/dsp
                          ------------------------------------

this is what it does when i use "aoss et" to start it:
                          ------- sound initialization -------
                          ------------------------------------
                          ----- Sound Info -----
                          sound system is muted
                          1 stereo
                          16384 samples
                          16 samplebits
                          1 submission_chunk
                          22050 speed
                          0x95a0878 dma buffer
                          No background file.
                          ----------------------

How do I unmute aoss? (Yes I've checked the alsamixer that's not it.)

So far, I'm starting to think the my straight ALSA is being reserved by the media players and so it's all ways busy, BUT using "aoss firefox" doesn't change anything... ??!

Could it be permissions or could it be just busy?

Why do 'THEY' have to make this so hard... just sound, everything else is easy and user friendly (basicly), but no, not sound... that would just be pushing it to make sound easy... >

Ok, after toying around for a few hours, I'm thinking that there must be something starting with KDE that's hogging my sound, it seems like only media players can really play sound and work no matter what I do... could it have to do with the kdemultimedia package, but I didn't have anywhere near this much trouble with sound before I installed it...

The only other thing I'm gonna start looking into is flash player 9 but so many people have it working just fine and now my problem has started in other apps, I'm really not sure this would be it anymore.

And I still haven't found a way to unmute "aoss et" Anyone have ANYTHING to TRY here? ANYTHING?! (I would prefer not to re-install kubuntu AGAIN... it would be the third time in a month...and this is the best working install yet, minus sound.)
