but there is another problem. Hopefully, you can help me.

there is a message that i do not understand please help me

XServer-xorg postinst warning: overwriting possibly-customised configuration file; backup in /etc/x11/xorg.confi.20070922174014

    what should i do?

    Re: SOS

That only means the dpkg-reconfigure routine is telling you that it is saving your prior (non-functional) xorg.conf file. Proceed.

      Re: SOS

When you edit many of the config files a backup is sometimes automatically generated. The file names are normally followed by ~ to identify them.

        Re: SOS

That is true, but if you edit the source file again, then the backup file is replaced. Saving a copy of the file to be edited before you edit it ensures that you still have the original should you need it.

            Re: SOS

            Open a console shell. Type:
            Code:
            cd /etc/x11
            sudo cp xorg.conf xorg.conf_original
            cd
            sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
Then just accept the warning (it will just make another backup of the xorg.conf file

Nothing, your done. ubuntu@ubuntu is your username@boxname. It just finished and put you back at the command prompt awaiting your next request. If you don't want to do anything else just type "startx" and you should get you desktop back.

                  Fatal server error:
                  caught signal 11. server aborting

XIO: fatal IO error 104 ( connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"

Have you ever had a functioning desktop since the install? What was the reason for the reconfigure? What type of graphics card do you have?

                        Re: SOS

When you run the dpkg-reconfigure script, on the first screen it asks if you want it to detect the display. In your case, I think you need to say "NO", then on the next screen you need to choose "VESA", and then finish the script.

If you do it that way, then I think you will get a GUI when you "startx". It will not use the full capability of your ATI card, but at least you will be able to use the system, run Firefox, run Adept Manager, etc.

After you have your system running with a VESA display, you might consider giving the Envy script installer a try, to install the ATI driver for your X1400. More on that here:

I would follow what dibl said. It looks like Kubuntu is not seeing you graphics card for some reason. By using "vesa" you should at least get to the desk top.
