My Linux friend told me that I will need a better gfx card to use Kubuntu. I am using an ATI Radeon Xpress 200. He says I will need at least a NVIDIA 7000+. Anyone?

It would all depend what you plan to use the box for. Linux has some gaming issues as in not available so it shouldn't be a concern.
One thing might be to have dvi or hdmi out if you plan to use it as a media center.
To use beryl or compiz you need a decent card but not top of the line.
Nvidia has better linux support than Ati but this will change eventually.
