adept - does it work?

I switched from SuSE to Kubuntu on a friend's advice and like the product very much with one exception: adept. It doesn't seem to work at all. It shows me a list of upgrades. I select KDEbase and it goes through a process then shows me that it wants to install upgrades to several KDE packages (OK), but that it is also going to remove all of the Open Office software. ?!?

I decide to try something simple: Add/Remove Programs. I find FireFox and check the box. After a few seconds I get a list of changes showing that it wants to install 3 programs and uninstall 804!! Some of 804 include KDE desktop, open office, etc.

My uname -r output is : 2.6.20-15-generic

Any clue to what is going on here? Thanks.

What says:

sudo apt-get -s install firefox

-s, --simulate, --just-print, --dry-run, --recon, --no-act
No action; perform a simulation of events that would occur but
do not actually change the system. Configuration Item:
APT::Get::Simulate.

You could use:
Synaptic
Synaptic is a graphical package management program for apt. It provides the same features as the apt-get command line utility with a GUI front-end based on Gtk+.

Adept
Adept is a GUI to the Advanced Packaging Tool for KDE. Adept is developed by Peter Ročkai and is sponsored by Canonical Ltd. through the Kubuntu project.

Apt
apt - Advanced Package Tool. APT is a management system for software packages.

Aptitude
A highly configurable console front-end for Debian APT. Aptitude is a text-based interface to the Debian GNU/Linux package system.

I used to use Linux Mint Gnome Edition and used synaptic all the time. However I now have Kubuntu Feisty and use Adept just because it is so similar to Synaptic I didn't feel like installing something else lol. For me Adept works fine though.

The only thing i ever used adept for was installing synaptic , so I can't be of much help

Adept worked for me.I installed everything using it,though at times I wasn't sure exactly how I did it.The Open Office thing really threw me too,as I didn't want to loose those programs.I closed my eyes and hit yes when that came up.Adept didn't kill it at all.It just did the upgrades I wanted.If you have any problems,you can re-install open office from the list in Adept.It's in there.I first upgraded my whole system via the Adept upgrade-install to 2.6.20-16 BEFORE I tried too many programs so I wouldn't have to reinstall upgrades for those packages.As a note,had a heck of a time with Amarok,Kaffine,K3B, until I found ALL the "libs" that were needed,especially lib-xine extra codecs.

Thanks to everyone, especially Rog131, for their help. I used apt-get and successfully upgraded my installation disks to the lastest files. I also added a couple of apps I wanted. I live on a small farm in Eastern Kansas with only dial-up (with an average throughput of 2500B/s) and it took 14 hours for the upgrade.

Bottom line: apt-get works for me.
