    emacs

    Hey everyone,
    I just finished installing Kubuntu, this is my first experience ever with linux and I know very very little about what I'm doing. I've been looking thru this forum to find help on installing emacs but I can't quite seem to do it. I type 'emacs' in the Konsole and this is what I get

    The program 'emacs' can be found in the following packages:
    * emacs21
    * emacs-snapshot
    * e3
    * emacs-snapshot-nox
    * emacs21-nox
    * jove
    * emacs-snapshot-gtk
    Try: sudo apt-get install <selected package>
    Make sure you have the 'universe' component enabled
    bash: emacs: command not found

    when I try "sudo apt-get install emacs21" I get this...

    Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information... Done
    E: Couldn't find package emacs21

    can anyone tell me what it is that I'm doing wrong?

    Re: emacs

    I got it.

    I did "sudo apt-get update" at the console then it installed fine.

    Would anyone be able to tell me why that fixed my problem?

      Maybe this:

      APT HOWTO
      http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/ap.../index.en.html

      and there:
      3.1 Updating the list of available packages

        Re: emacs

        Yet another new user experiencing the problems that can result when *NOT* using Adept Manager to locate and install desired applications.

        To all new users of Kubuntu - Adept Manager is going to be your BEST FRIEND when initially looking for applications to install. It (currently) contains over 22,000 applications for potential use within Kubuntu.

        In RobbyC's case, locating emacs in Adept Manger and marking it for installation would have resulting in it's installation without mishap.
