    grub problem on windows system

OK, curiousity getting to me, this is ubuntu asked on a malware removal forum for windows

I recently installed Linux Ubuntu on my external USB Hard Drive, when Restarting my laptop it came up with an error and then I took out the Hard Drive and restarted to see if it would run Windows Xp Home but the same message appeared again and now can not get it back at all, plus my Laptop never came with any disks.
I want to suggest system restore, but is there a smarter answer so that gets him his system back with the external harddirve working with linux as he wants

    Plausible, I'd say.

Whoa . . . you are off and at 'm already.

The second post in this How-To explains some subtleties about installing Kubuntu to external USB HDD:

        http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3081748.0

(Basically, be careful where GRUB goes -- it should go into the root partition on the external USB HDD, NOT into any internal HDD MBR; and then you must set your BIOS correctly, each BIOS may be different, and the BIOS must support Boot by USB.)

thanks, the original poster has not posted back but meanwhile someone else has posted suggesting detaching the USB devices and then under safetymode choosing "last know good config.." well at least I tried and my bet is that he won't give up so I will need to know if the link posted above for kubuntu also works for ubuntu too, thanks

Yep -- it'll work for Ubuntu, too.
Just the differences like the name of the file manager, sudo gedit vs kdesu kate, etc.
