    SIGSEGV-trouble

    Hi people!
    I'm what you can call a Winblows-user that dislike vista...
    I got this really pretty laptop, HP nc6000 with ATI Mobility Radeon 9600

    My problem lies within myself, and well, I've tried to accept this problem that I'm not able to have 1280x1024 but need to stick with 1024x768 ._.

    Anyways, as I was going though the settings of my screens, in order to make a movie appear on the external screen and not only on the laptopscreen, i sudcceded once again to mess up everything.. Again (happened last week to, but a friend helped me with remote control and talking on the phone, he's not available)

    So, yes, I know what youre thinking, "that girl should NEVER have set a finger or thought in getting Linux" but i really hated Linux about 2 months ago, so this is good, atleast I think so =)

    Well, yes, the error i get, the link above (http://rafb.net/p/MpKyB747.html) is one part, and the other is a pretty thing that pop's up as soon as i try to get a hold of the monitorsettings so i can change everything back..
    I'm kind of lacking the right settings and so on, don't even have 1024x768-thingy now, but some other creepy and no X's in the upper right corners or menus or something in the windows.. I can't even resize ;P

    So, my problem is in your hands, I would rather not reinstall everything.. Again (done that about 2-3 times now i think) and I'm NOT going back to windows, going to give this thing a chance first..

    The message is saying something about;
    "when opening kcontrol KDE is crashing and doing something with signal 11 (SIGSEGV)"
    (translated from Swe to Eng, so i really can't tell everything it says)

    I'm open to any suggestions and help of many kinds.. Or something..
    Have a nice day.

    /jey
    p.s. sorry for the long post

    Re: SIGSEGV-trouble

    Anyways, as I was going though the settings of my screens
    If you did use: K > System Configuration > Monitor & Video...
    Sometimes this corrupts X server configuration file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf)

    But there shoud be backupfiles: xorg.conf -> xorg.conf.1 (xorg.conf.2...)
    So check /etc/X11/ . If there is:

    1) BACKUP xorg.conf
    2) copy/rename one of the automatic backupfiles (xorg.conf.1 ?) to the xorg.conf
    3) Restart X / Reboot
    4) Is this better or worse ?

    I'm not able to have 1280x1024 but need to stick with 1024x768 ._.
    Have you tried:

    and also:

    Because I found it very complex to manually edit the X-Server config file (xorg.conf in Ubuntu) to add my monitor refresh rates

      4) Is this better or worse ?
      Better, much better, Thank you! I had to Google on commands, but it went pretty well =)

      I got a new problem though, I CAN enter the monitorsettings now, and I'm going to get rid of my regular monitor, don't need it after this, so with the 1280x1024-problem, I'll save the help about that, but won't use it now.

      But, yes. the problem, I can change the settings to 1024x768 but the whole screen goes all blurry and half of it is almost readable.

      So, I'm going to read around on the links, but not sure if I'm going to make it, but i'll try!
      At the moment my resolution is 640x400 <3
