just messed up my video - now what

    Hello,
I've just messed up my display and now I'm trying to sort it out. I'm running 6.10 on a Compaq presario M2000 laptop. I was trying to change some video settings through system GUI, but I didn't think that I applied any of the changes . Everything worked fine until I rebooted. The display is mostly normal until I login to KDE, at which point the top two thirds of the screen shows at least two copies of the screen in vertical columns, while the bottom third is a mess.
Sorry If any of this is incoherent, but it's late
(but I'm not tired enough that I'm seeing things)
I would guess that I have a video card - monitor setting mismatch but I'm not sure where to start poking, and I'm afraid to make things worse.
    Any suggestions appreciated.

      Thanks, that did it!
I saw that before but I wasn't sure if it applied because the symptoms didn't match.
