KDE 3.5 Upgrade

I can not seem to get KDE 3.5 installed properly.

1. I install a "clean" Kubuntu 5.10.
2. apt-get update
3. apt-get upgrade
4. reboot
5. wget http://people.ubuntu.com/~jriddell/k...iddell-key.gpg
6. sudo apt-key add kubuntu-packages-jriddell-key.gpg
7. deb http://kubuntu.org/packages/kde35 breezy main to repo
8. apt-get update

(I have tested the following process a few times (completly reinstalling to test)

9. Finally update to KDE 3.5
a. apt-get upgrade
This will not install all packages

b. apt-get dist-upgrade
This will indeed install all package; however some are uninstalled and always produces an error.
- It breaks Kontact, Kmail, etc.

c. apt-get upgrade again says I have to use apt-dist upgrade -f to resolve dependacy problems.

so then apt-get dist-upgrade -f and it reinstalls everything again, and knews and sync is still broken in the end

d. apt-get dist-upgrade -f
I have not tested this withour first doing apt-get dist-upgrade; however, all the instructions I read say you have to only apt-get dist-upgrade


* Also regarding repos
- I have tested with default repos
- I have tested with default repos (non us)
- I have tested with the forum referenced "http://www.psychocats.net/linux/sources.php" repo list for 5.10

results are always the same in the end.

** Also, since Amarok is now backported and named differently than
"deb http://kubuntu.org/packages/amarok-1.3.7 breezy main"
then the result is that backports amarok 1.3.7 will overwrite the kubuntu 1.3.7 package.

Am I doing something in the wrong order?

First I am no expert and I don't know if it has anything to do with your problem, but in looking at your steps vs the way I upgraded:

1. I install a "clean" Kubuntu 5.10.
5. wget http://people.ubuntu.com/~jriddell/k...iddell-key.gpg
6. sudo apt-key add kubuntu-packages-jriddell-key.gpg
7. deb http://kubuntu.org/packages/kde35 breezy main to repo
2. apt-get update
3. apt-get upgrade

This is the order I upgraded and it worked perfectly, but again I'm no expert so it may be something totally different in your case. At any rate hope you get it working; 3.5 is sweet.

When doing that (in my case) It does hold back some packages-ie., Kmail.

Does Kontact,kmail,knews,and sync work correctly using this method of upgrade you describe?

Knews and sync?
Those are not kde packages, do you mean knode and ksync?

If not, maybe your packages are conflicting with kde 3.5, have you tried fixing or reinstalling those packages (EDIT: or installing knode and ksync instead)?

Well, I don't know as I don't use those apps. I use Evolution for mail and PDA.

Correct knode and ksync (I just named them in previous post as they are in Kontact).

I can try this method and attempt to install these back; however, the fact that libs get removed/ or chaged and now conflicting, is very disconcerting. It would seem that the dist-upgrade to KDE 3.5 should not produce errors and lib conflicts from an "official Kubuntu" upgrade, but I am upgrading simply from an unmodified kubuntu install.

Perhaps others have not noticed this because they do not use kontact, kmail, knews, etc.

But When I read comments like, KDE 3.5 installed perfectly for me and so on, I tend to think something I am doing is wrong, my CD is currupted, or indeed something is wrong.

* btw I know I may sound serious about this, but believe I am not losing sleep over this, I like Kubuntu, but I just want to figure out how to make it right.

Well, such basic upgrades should go without too much hassle, you're correct in assuming that . I just thought you might have installed knews (instead of knode) and that might have caused your upgrade problems.

I use Knode (though not ksync)...and I had no problems with my upgrade (however, the packages involved where earlier versions when I upgraded)...so it might be an issue with current packages (but then I'd suspect there would be more people posting about the issue)

By the way, have you enabled 'universe' repos? Knode is in universe.

Yes I have enabled universe, but not backports, simply because the backport of amarok 1.3.7 is named differently than the "official kubuntu" amarok 1.3.7 and wants to upgrade again.

I am not sure that this matters much, when I test another install, perhaps I will just use backports version (or name in this case) and just not use the "official kubuntu amarok".

You can safely upgrade the 'backports version' of amarok over the 'kubuntu packages version'...at least I could :P

I'm also new to Kubuntu but I upgraded to 3.5 without too much issue. Only difference is I used the graphical upgrader (adept updater) and yes - doing that broke kontact because kmail was removed but then kmail (and other KDE stuff) was available on Adept. After adding it back this way I had a clean 3.5

when i upgraded to 3.5 after doing "apt-get dist-upgrade", it did hold many of the packages back like kmail so I did "apt-get upgrade and it finished the upgrade from there

I follow swordwielder's advise, and upgraded and he did. Then added held back kontact, kmail, etc. Then I added Knode.

Everything went well this time and no crazy dependacy errors as before when using dist-upgrade; however, something is still not quite right.

- When I end session or restart (with or without open windows), I get a 'Cannot talk to Klauncher' message and a sometimes a full error window that describes a break. The trace is not working on that error box because it says gdm (I can not remember exactly what it is named) is not avaiable or installed.

other than restarting klauncher, everything is working fine and I like KDE 3.5.

* Also Sync (located in kontact is not installed, I got it working once, but forgot what I installed)
