<partly solved> Opening specific ports for Ktorrent

I don't use torrents very often but today I am trying to use Ktorrent (bittorrent torrentflux aswell) to download something and am getting really slow speeds. I've opened the relevent port(s) in my router but no go. Not nowing anything about iptables I installed firestarter - that tells me that port 6881 is being blocked but won't allow me to open it?

    Any suggestions?

You may have it blocked on your modem/router. You need it forwarded to your machine. For this particular problem, it's no an issue with Kubuntu, please refer to your modem/router manual on how to do port-forwarding.

I've since uninstalled firestarter, installed guidedog and guarddog and opened everything needed - nothing.

I then right clicked on the torrent itself and selected speed settings and noticed that they were the wrong way around to what was in Ktorrent settings? Set them correctly and it seems OK, but seems I need to do this on all torrents?!

Opening a port is not enough, you need it forwarded, otherwise the incoming connections will never reach your machine, because the modem/router will be doing nothing with the connections.
As for Ktorrent, if you changed the settings while there were some files to be downloaded, these files may not have the changes applied automatically, that's why you saw wrong settings on them.
If you add new torrents now, they will probably use the new config.
