    cant connect, ip address?

ok i installed kubuntu yesterday. when i did so i wasnt in range of any network and i dont know the proper info for the ones i do connect to (school, the neighbors, coffee shops, etc) so i just skipped that whole install section. but today while in range i opened kwifimanager. i clicked 'autodetect' and it set 'eth1'. i typed in the network name and hit 'activate'. it seems to have recognized everything properly, full connection speed and signal, the proper name in 'connected to network' is listed, it lists the access point and freq channel, BUT i have no 'local ip' (says 'unavailable') and konq does not connect.

so what do i try next?

some other things ive just been trying:

when i type 'sudo ifup eth1' i get back 'unknown interface eth1=eth1.'

i am using an intersil prism wireless card (internal in a fujitsu p2120).

when i enter 'dmesg' it identifies my eth0 (realtek rtl8139) and eth1 (intersil prism 1). but then i get this repeated over and over a dozen or so times:
    eth1: no IPv6 routers present
eth1: New link status: Disconnected (0002)
eth1: New link status: Connected (0001)
eth1: New link status: Disconnected (0002)
eth1: New link status: Connected (0001)
eth1: New link status: Disconnected (0002)
eth1: New link status: Connected (0001)
eth1: New link status: Connected (0001)

now what back to pleading for help! (please?)

      Hi,

I don't really see why in kwifimanager you have eth1 and in ifup you don't get it...
Can you copy content of :
      - ifconfig
      - iwconfig (when you're close to the network)
      - /etc/network/interfaces

      Cheers
