Anti-virus isn't something, that in *ubuntu, you need to worry about - AV software doesn't need to be installed as a general rule.

Installing programs. Use Adept Manager accessed via K Menu | System | Adept Manager (Package Manager). You will be prompted for a password, which will be your password.

There are additional package managers that you can install. Synaptic is the one that can be installed through Adept Manager. What you want to avoid, until you are more familiar and comfortable with *ubuntu, is to download files directly from the Web (.deb files, source files, other Linux Distro install files, etc).

If there are programs you want, and you don't know if/how they can be used/installed, post a question. There are plenty of good folks here who will be happy to help guide you. Your experience with *ubuntu will be better if you don't try and jump into the deep end of the Linux pool to soon!

As for firewall - Linux systems generally use something called "iptables" which you have by default, and (as far as I know) the default setting is to refuse connections (good).

If you want to tinker with the firewall settings (eg to allow remote logins, or file sharing, etc) it's easiest to install one of the several point-and-click programs that exist: I would recommend either Guarddog or Firestarter, both are available using the method Snowhog describes.

        As for installing windows applications:

        1. Install wine with adept (or if you like console, then "sudo apt-get install wine")

        2. type winecfg in the console to get a graphical interface where you set up things in wine.(o just skip tihis part to go with default settings)

        3. open the program using wine.
NOTE: wine itself doesn't have a graphical interface so you might need to type in console (another way is to right click the exe file and choose "open with" and in the field just type wine)

To check if the program works with wine visit http://appdb.winehq.org/ .It contains valuable information, as not all programs run out-of-box

        Good luck

Before you try you install any windows apps I would suggest you first try to find a Linux equivalent(or better). Wine is great software but not all apps run as they do on windows and some not at all. With a little bit of work and perseverance there isn't much that windows does that Linux/Kubuntu can't.
