Konqueror "Could not find mime type..."?

    Hi,

since yesterday I get this strange message
    Could not find mime type
    application/octet-stream
on my Kubuntu 7.04, each time I start Konqueror or Package Manager.

What does this mean, and how can I avoid it?

    Thanks,

    siggi

Maybe the mime filetypes has been corrupted.

You can try to move the folder ~/.kde/share/mimelnk to another place. Then log out and log in. The folder will be recreated with new content and should left if with the "default" values.

This can probably solve your problems, but you will loose any file association that you made manually.

If something goes unexpectedly wrong move the folder back to it's place and everything will be back as it was. I hope that it works.

.kde is a hidden folder on your home. If you need assistance to move folder or navigate, just answer.

    Javier.

      Sorry, no success!

      1) sudo su
      2) cd ~/.kde/share
      3) created backup/
      4) mv mimelnk backup; new mimelnk now in backup/
      5) reboot, same problem

      6) found an old, already purged, program in K > edit menu > Lost & Found; cut it
      7) reboot
      8) same problem (N.B. this should be "8 )", not 8))
      9) sudo su
      10) cd ~/.kde/share
      11) created backup2/
      12) mv mimelnk backup; mimelnk now in backu2/
      13) reboot, same problem

Strange, though: this "Mime..." message turns up only when I use either
      <Alt>+<F2>"kdesu konqueror"
      or
      K > System > Adept Manager
i.e., when I have to input my password. When I just use Konqueror in ordinary mode without password
      <Alt>+<F2>"konqueror"
      no problem!

      Strange
