Alternative to PLF repository (for wmvdmod.dll)

The original problem is reading .wmv files with Kaffeine and installing the appropriate codecs. I searched for help on the Kubuntu forum and found the following:

Which recommended adding the PLF repositories available on ftp://ftp.free.fr. I eventually found out that the PLF project is currently semi-dead, and was not able to find any other repository to get the codecs.

Does anyone have an alternative suggestion?

Eventually found a solution on Medibuntu.

I have a follow-up question. The apt-get update command indicates that the medibuntu repository is enabled, while it does not appear in the sources.list (see below).

Can anyone explain this to me?

The sources.list needs to contain the medibuntu repositories, as you pointed out, it does not. Either edit the file (as root) and add the following two entries:

deb http://medibuntu.sos-sts.com/repo/ dapper free non-free
deb-src http://medibuntu.sos-sts.com/repo/ dapper free non-free

or open your package manager and add them there.

But why does apt check the packages.medibuntu.org repository if it is not listed in sources.list?

Because if you followed the old Medibuntu instructions, you placed a file in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ rather than appending a line to /etc/apt/sources.list... both are pretty much equivalent in their results, I'm not quite sure what the point of the sources.list.d directory is?

The /etc/apt/sources.list.d directory provides a way to add
sources.list entries in seperate files that end with sources.list file.

You can have clean and working sources.list if you only play with sources.list.d

...so instead of having a full sources.list with everything in one place, you have a full sources.list.d/ directory with everything all over the place. Ah, makes sense...(!)
