the person in question does not have a legit copy of windows he cannot download it, the machine crashes for time to time, first I thought of just using a live CD but now I am wondering if there is a app that checks the running of the system from the live CD, thanks

Doubtfully, mainly because a system has to be running so as to be able to be checked. Or put simply a OS (kernel) that is not running cannot crash.

Having said that maybe MS will find a way of doing that as well. :P
