    installing linux

Hi: i have used knoppix and ubuntu cd's to try linux.i liked ubuntu and
installed it.i encountered numerous problems.i have two(2) pc's.i want to use the older one for linux.it has two HD's,(16g,and 80g).i have very little data on the first and none on the second.when i installed ubuntu,it did not
show both drives??with knoppix both drives were shown.it evidently
sees both HD's as one drive.
secondly.my sound card is fine.with ubuntu
and knoppix, i really have to crank the volume up on whatever cd player i use.
thirdly,i can not play mp3's.i assume some drivers or software needs
    to be installed
i would really like to dual boot but to be honest the hassle to do so is
overwhelming.the bad thing is i worked for at&t and used unix but not on a pc.what a predicament!any clear concise help?thank you. p.s.how do i respond to any responses i get from this forum? again, thanx.
