Problem playing Mp3 & Mpeg files in Amarok/Kaffeine

I installed Kubuntu a week ago, and whenever I try to play a mp3 file, amarok starts but gives an error message as:
"Amarok currently cannot play mp3 files"
There is a button on the message to install mp3 support. However, when I click on the button, amarok hangs and needs to be terminated.

Similarly, when I try to play a mpeg file, the following error message is shown:
"No plugin found to handle this resource"

    How do I fix these?

You need to download and install the required non-free codecs to play mp3 files.

How to get non-free multimedia codecs http://medibuntu.sos-sts.com/
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

already downloaded the restricted formats package from this site too.

I think we should stop posting in this topic since the same is continued below:

checked up the Ubuntu documentation site... and got to know that I had not installed [libxine1 -ffmpeg]. Installed the same. It made amarok play mp3 files and kaffeine play mpg files.

        thank you

Glad you figured it out. While frustrating, it is part of the fun of using/learning Linux.
