I have tried to do it once following this how-to.

I was doing it for fun and get tired. So I don't know if it will work.

      It seems complicated very much!
I am scared of this, I will try it if free.

Why does't ubuntu release a slim version for USB storage?
With...beautiful GUI, some tools, for example , kedit,konquer,koffice,gimp,mplayer,kdevelop...I don't need everything but some applications.

      hope someone do this!

      Thank you very much, javierrivera!

Try taking a look at Xubuntu. It uses the XFCE desktop and is very light on resources compaired to Kubuntu and Ubuntu.

Qqmike did it, and included some good links:

              The question dibl was
I have a USB key with 1G byte memory, I want to install live cd into it, can I do so?
Qqmike had Kubuntu on his hard drive. What he did, my understanding is, was to put the boot on a USB stick

It's not identical to the OP's question, but there is a lot of similarity. Qqmike installed Super Grub Disk on the thumb drive, which is analogous (in general) to the task of installing *buntu Linux on a thumb drive, right?

Next step: Modify the SGD boot menu you see when you turn on the PC (the SGD /boot/grub/menu.lst file of sdc1, on the UFD) by adding a “title” boot entry for GParted

If a very small, bootable from thumb drive Linux is desired/needed, look at DSL (Damn Small Linux), which can be installed to a thumb drive. It only takes 50Mbs. It's very cool.

Re: Can I install live CD to a USB key?

Oh..Sorry,maybe I did not show my idea clearly..

I did installed slax and dsl some days ago,bug they are not convenient for newbie

for example , slax has not a good dependency solution, so , user usually forgets to install necessary software for some applications, they don't know how to do.

After many times attempt on linux, I found ubuntu, it is so convenient and strong, I think it is a great innovation and loved it immediately.

I have already installed ubuntu on my PC HDD, I almost did not use MS windows NOW.

Ubuntu is so good , so i want to install it to my USB stick , so I can use Ubuntu anywhere instead of windows.

Re: Can I install live CD to a USK key?

                      Okay. Understand.

I really don't believe you are going to be able to do what you want - to install Ubuntu to a USB stick. Such devices simply are not large enough. The root partition alone ( "/" ) is recommended to be 5 to 8Gb (gigabytes). As most USB sticks are smaller than this .....

You may still want to pop over to DSL's home page and checkout their Linux distro. I've actually played with it (just a bit) before I installed Kubuntu. DSL can, and does, fit on to even a small thumb drive.
