    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Java

The basic steps are (all explained in the link)
    1. Enable the Multiverse repository
    2. Install Java (Sun Java recommended for most setups)
    3. Setup the installed Java as the default
    4. Enable Java in your browser

Post again if you have issues or more questions

      Re: Installing java

I followed the tutorial on enabling multiverse in here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Kubuntu I got to the following point
"This is where you will be able to enable the Universe and Multiverse repositories. The first step on this page is to locate this line and the line below it. Once you have found these two line right click and select enable for both the deb and deb-src lines." I can't see anything in the Manage Repositories screen, exept for toolbars and type, url, distribution, components and then in the bottom there are the reset, apply and close and so on.

Hmm, you might have a problem with your sources, can you post the contents of the file /etc/apt/sources.list

By his description of what he sees, he's using an earlier (?) version of *ubuntu - Edgy I'm thinking it would be helpful to know what version of *ubuntu he is running.
Windows no longer obstructs my view.
Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.

Certainly, although the page mentioned https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Kubuntu has instructions for edgy (and older) as well.

I concluded the OP is using the older version of 'manage repositories' and the repository list is empty
