I assume, that the 64bit version runs the OS and Kernel in 64bit, but programs and applications would still run at 32bit. Is this an accurate assumption?

LOL, you are right about the "loaded question", but I assure you that nothing surpasses the "flash player for AMD64" thing. =P
You have everything running in 64bit, since *almost* all 32bit packages have a 64bit build. I said almost because some stuff simply don't exist in 64bit, like the flash player.
Gimp, KDE, Openoffice, drivers, everything currently running on your system is 64bit. In order to run 32bit stuff, you need to install extra packages to load the executables, like "linux32" and the 32bit version of the libraries programs depend on.
Your system is not yet tainted with 32bit junk, but eventually it will be, at least for Flash and Skype.Comment
