Help I cant close the x server

I've tried almost everything i can think of to close my x server so that i can install my NVIDIA drivers, but nothing is working!

the intit 3 command isn't doing anything, or maybe i'm just doing it wrong?

try

sudo etc/init.d/kdm stop

Tell me more -- you're running Kubuntu, right? Installed, not Live, right? What Nvidia card is that, by the way?
