    Curious why ...

I am curious as to why most people it seems install Ubuntu first then install Kubuntu over the top of it. Why not just install Kubuntu? Is it to have the option of using Gnome? Or is there a significant reason for installing both?

    Thank you.

    Re: Curious why ...

I think part of the reason that happens is that people decide to start with the mainstream release of the *buntu family because they figure it'll have the best support, best packages and such. The people who actually install kubuntu over ubuntu are often times just seeking the KDE desktop, but don't realize they can just install the kde-desktop in their ubuntu installation and get mostly the same experience.

Sorry for the confusion. Thats actually what I was asking - Why install the kde-desktop Over Ubuntu instead of just installing Kubuntu to begin with? From what I have been understanding from reading thru the boards here, is they are both the same; just one uses Gnome and the other KDE.

I went the other way from most people (as usual!)

But, not "over the top of it" -- instead "beside it" on another hard drive.

Curiosity was the reason, and the desire to play with the 64-bit version, without disturbing my happy 32-bit Kubuntu system. 8)

My first install of Linux was Kubuntu....though I admit I tried the Ubuntu LiveCD first, then the Kubuntu LiveCD and Kubuntu won me over

It's still mostly the same answer though. It's people trying the *buntu distros using the main branch because they assume it'll be the best supported, etc, then deciding they're either curious about KDE, or they're really a KDE user at heart and aren't happy with trying to adjust to gnome.

From my perspective, KDE and Gnome really aren't that different in their overall performance, but the differences lie in all the tweaking of settings, default preferences and basically all the little things that make a desktop comfortable. This leads to people occasionally switching over to try the other, thinking that either the other is amazing because its users rave about it, or thinking it can't be hard to learn because it's not that different, then they just end up back where they started because all the minor things you have to relearn for what ultimately isn't that big of a difference just wears a person down.

Interesting. Just could never figure out the purpose of installing Ubuntu then the kde-desktop over it when you could just install Kubuntu. I had tried out Gnome for awhile, but just didn't care for it, especially the tools compared to KDE. This is just My opinion. Don't mean to be insulting anyone.
Probably has something to do with being a windows convert rather than a mac one.
              Thanks, All, for the responses.

Just out of interest, where did you get this info? or are you just guessing based on a couple of posts inquiring about installing kde desktop on ubuntu? I'd just be interested to know if that really is the case. When I first switched to linux I installed about 4 distros, decided kubuntu was the one for me, and then wiped them all and installed kubuntu again.

Thats what a person told me on the Ubuntu forum when I was reading and asking some questions. I was moving off of pclinuxos because of the terrible moderators on their forum and looking into U/Kubuntu. I have always used KDE as my desktop preference, but was curious about Gnome.
So, I am assuming he was being truthful to me. But cant say for sure.
I installed Kubuntu on my machine from cd and am extremely happy with it!

                    HI txHarleyman,
I'm a PCLinuxOS user as well as a couple other distros. Curious that you "trashed" the mods at PCLOS. I've found MOST of them, and the community as a whole, to be very friendly and helpful. I hate that you had problems there. NOT trying to talk you into anything, just more or less surprised that you had troubles.

Hello neighbor! You're right; most are very good. But the few that were bad were very bad. Tex sent me an email telling me he got rid of a few, but I am staying with Kubuntu. The pclos distro is very good. Worked great for me, but when I evaluate a distro, I evaluate more than just the software. In my opinion, I think Kubunu is more up to date, they have standard release cycles and the forum is great.

Again, just my personal opinion. As Tex says " as long as you're running Linux, thats what counts ".

It is much easier (if you already have ubuntu installed) to install the kubuntu-desktop meta-package instead of another full install, and you don't even have to reboot

                          Re: Curious why ...

Some prefer blodes - others prefer brunettes...

                          And some want it hot:
anyway to switch between gnome and kde?
                          http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=253761

                          I tried this and:
+ You can run kde, gnome.. whatever in the window
That is: Gnome session over kde desktop or Kde session over Gnome desktop (or
another kde session over kde desktop)
                          + Really simple, just say:
                          Code:
                          gdmflexiserver --xnest
and window pops up - log in - and you have kde and gnome running together.

                          - This works with gdm not with kdm.

                          Note #1
                          In Feisty:
Same user prevented from logging in in nested login
                          https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...dm/+bug/122046

So you can't log in twice -> make another user or
                          edit /etc/gdm/gdm.conf. There is line:
                          Code:
                          #AlwaysLoginCurrentSession=true
                          change this (and uncomment)
                          Code:
                          AlwaysLoginCurrentSession=false
                          Note #2
You can easily change default display manager:
                          Code:
                          sudo dpkg-reconfigure kdm
                          or
                          Code:
                          sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm
And choose your favorite display manager

                          Note #3
Backup before you edit systemfiles (gdm.conf)
                          Before you edit, BACKUP !
