What do I need to compile a tarball?

The default installation of kubuntu didn't give me any developer tools. I have since then installed gcc and g++ but I still can't even ./configure a tarball. What other packages am I missing? Thanks

That depends on the tarball, it should include some instructions what libraries etc. you'll need to have installed. Install the build-essentials package first.

I believe the package name is build-essential.
