I used ubuntu befor, and I wanted a text login, so I removed gmd, worked great. I installed kubuntu-desktop and when I went to remove kdm it wanted to remove kubuntu-desktop as well!!! How do I set it so that on boot it goes straight into shell and when I say startx it goes straign to kde?

Re: Text login (I dont want kdm!)
Several ways to do that. First of all, the kubuntu-desktop package is a dummy package that doesn't actually contain any data on its own. Once kubuntu is installed, it is safe to remove it. You'll only need to re-install it when upgrading to a newer Kubuntu release.
Secondly: sudo update-rc.d -f kdm remove
