    Sound in Toshiba A105-S4001

    I have a Satellite A105-S4001 notebook by Toshiba, with an Intel HDA audio chipset (ICH7). I cannot get its sound working in KUbuntu 7.

    After testing KUbuntu, I blasted the original Windows install back onto the disk, and sound worked. I repeated this with my FreeBSD 6.1 image, it also worked. So the hardware isn't a problem.

    Sound "automagically" worked in KUbuntu 6. I didn't try the live CD with 7 to see if it actually worked there. I tried the suggestions of compiling/installing the latest ARTs in a readme I found, and forcing ARTs in the control panel, but that did not fix the issue. While I *could* go back to 6, I'd rather not, as I had an extremely unpleasant bad experience with it.

    Any suggestions on my next step for testing and diagnostics (I'll be installing KUbuntu again tomorrow to try some more).

    Oh, and the spellchecker on this site doesn't like KUbuntu. Sorry, but that amused me...

    Thank you!

    Edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst file (as root) and add to the end of your kernel line the following:

    acpi=off

    Save and reboot. This is what it took for me to get working sound on my Toshiba laptop (P105). This got me working sound, at the expense of APM (Advanced Power Management), but I can live with that.
    Windows no longer obstructs my view.
    Using Kubuntu Linux since March 23, 2007.
