Can't configure my lan or gateway

I have a small LAN with three computers connecting to the internet through a router/firewall - the router address is 192.168.1.2

I've configured it so this computer where I installed Kubuntu (latest release) must have ip 192.168.1.10 and must seek the gateway at 192.168.1.2

however, I can't get it work... it doesn't access internet
the router doesn't ping and the other computers neither

I tried editing manually the lan configuration with kde and admin rights
I noticed that every time I try to set the gateway to "192.168.1.2", it says "ok", then if I reopen the network panel it is still 192.168.1.1 which is not the right ip address of the gateway

furthermore, I should be able to ping other computers if I had set correctly my ip in Kubuntu to 192.168.1.10 and subnet mask to 255.255.255.0... but it doesn't ping... why??

I'm writing from XP SP2 now...

Lots of variables here. Almost too many
I noticed that every time I try to set the gateway to "192.168.1.2", it says "ok", then if I reopen the network panel it is still 192.168.1.1 which is not the right ip address of the gateway
In what program are you making these changes? Are you using KnetworkManager in kubuntu? Do you need a sudo first? "sudo knetworkmanager" ??

Why are you assigning IPs? Wouldn't DHCP be much easier?

Why does the kubuntu machine need .10 address? Have you instructed the router to give that address to that MAC addrerss? Are you assigning all machines an IP?

    Are you using MAC filtering?

Is this a wireless or wried netework?

From the Windows Machines, can you ping the kubuntu machine? Can the Win Machines can ping the router?

in the kubuntu machine open a console and type "ifconfig -a" without quotes. Post the results. In a Windows Machine type "ipconfig /all" and post the results.

Re: Can't configure my lan or gateway

Is the address of the router .2 ? My experience is that it should either be .0 or .1? And more often than not, this is a factory setting that cannot be changed in the router. When you ping the .2 do you get a return? Not saying you're wrong, just wondering? I'm assuming your router is also your gateway. Is this correct?

I have no idea what a sudo is... anyway I tried both clicking on the ethernet icon on the bottom left tray or the network properties panel in the system settings (I know KDE allows making admin changes on the fly by typing the password again)

Why does the kubuntu machine need .10 address? Have you instructed the router to give that address to that MAC addrerss? Are you assigning all machines an IP?
yes, each machine has an IP

there are three computers (three with XP, one of which with XP + Kubuntu)

each computer is connected to each other through a linksys (cisco) switch

the switch is both wired/wireless, providing lan connection to a computer laptop

the swtich is connected to the router/firewall, which acts as an internet gateway for all the machines in the lan

for some reason the switch wants to be 192.168.1.1
therefore I assigned 192.168.1.2 to the router (which is fully configurable)

        Are you using MAC filtering?
no, except on the wireless connection, which runs on its own and it's fine

From the Windows Machines, can you ping the kubuntu machine? Can the Win Machines can ping the router?
windows machines all ping router and themselves

when I start kubuntu on my computer I can't ping or be pinged by anyone

in the kubuntu machine open a console and type "ifconfig -a" without quotes. Post the results. In a Windows Machine type "ipconfig /all" and post the results.
ok, I'll do that this evening

        thank you very much

the router I am using is fully configurable, can use any address and is working fine as 192.168.1.2 on windows

This looks like the place to start.

Are you trying to configure kubuntu to connect wired or wireless?

Is the kubuntu machine a dual bootable? If so, when booted in Windows, can you ping the router and switch? But not in kubuntu?

Fiesty or Edgy? I noticed that the default network controlling program (i forget its name) that came with Edgy was not very good. I uninstalled it and grabbed knetworkmanager. That was more configurable and effective, especially with wireless. k->Interenet->Knetworkmanager is that the program you are using?

sudo gives you root (kind of like administrator) powers. In a Konsole you gotta type sudo to do anything that modifies the system settings stuff.

for some reason the switch wants to be 192.168.1.1
therefore I assigned 192.168.1.2 to the router (which is fully configurable)
            So....
            internet--------------->Router--------------->Switch-------------->Computer. ??
            xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx 192.168.1.2 192.168.1.1 192.168.1.10
Doesn't the Router need your DNS IP as its gateway, the switch need to have the router's IP as its gateway, and the computer need the Switch's IP as its gateway? Not sure how multiple switches and routers work on a network. Mine own only has 1.

Re: Can't configure my lan or gateway

Are you trying to configure kubuntu to connect wired or wireless?
wired, the wireless is for the laptop only
I only have an integrated wired ethernet port on my desktop computer, no wireless

Is the kubuntu machine a dual bootable? If so, when booted in Windows, can you ping the router and switch? But not in kubuntu?
it is a dual boot on different hard drives
with windows there's no problem as I told, the lan is detected, everybody pings everybody, I have internet connection

              Fiesty or Edgy?
I've downloaded the latest release a few days ago

I noticed that the default network controlling program (i forget its name) that came with Edgy was not very good. I uninstalled it and grabbed knetworkmanager. That was more configurable and effective, especially with wireless. k->Interenet->Knetworkmanager is that the program you are using?
I don't remember. I just click on the ethernet icon on the tray bar. Or in the network properties from the "start" panel. Kde asks for my password before any changes. I make te changes, but everything is like before (when I try to set 192.168.1.2 for my gateway). The fact that I have to swtich from Linux to Windows for connecting to internet is confusing. Now I have to close windows, reboot, start linux, note these things, write them down, reboot, reopen windows, connect to the internet before I can tell. I've been spending some time with Linux in some evening for fun, so I don't have much time to dedicate to it unfortunately.

sudo gives you root (kind of like administrator) powers. In a Konsole you gotta type sudo to do anything that modifies the system settings stuff.
ok... But since I'm the only user of this machine, couldn't just I log in as admin without resubmitting my admin pass everytime?

              internet--------------->Router--------------->Switch-------------->Computer. ??
              xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx 192.168.1.2 192.168.1.1 192.168.1.10
              yes that is correct

switch has an IP address, but actually the switch (it is a linksys/cisco switch)
              has this configuration:

to open the web config panel I type 192.168.1.1
              inside has this settings:
              local IP address: 192.168.1.1
              subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
              IP address 192.168.1.2
              gateway 192.168.1.2
static dns 1 (opendns address, same as set in windows and linux)
static dns 2 (as above, secondary dns)
              start IP address: 192.168.1.3
max IP addresses: 50 (means that anything betwen 192.168.1.3-50 works)

in the router/gateway (which is at the 192.168.1.2 address)
there are a few nat rules, like port filtering etc for specific IPs in the LAN
that's why I use fixed IP on each machine
anyway I'd configure Linux so it would use the same IP as in Windows (192.168.1.10)

with windows it is working perfectly with the above configuration

I took a screenshot but was unable to save it on a windows readable partition (I have linux installed in its own partition and windows on multiple NTFS partitions - I know there's a way to read and write safely on NTFS partitions from Linux but I have still to figure out)

I'll try to save the screeshot on a floppy (if I could only find one these days...) or as last resort take a picture of the screen with a digital camera

or you could try to write it out by hand and then transcribe it into this forum. Pen and paper, the new stone age.

But since the linux machine is dual bootable, and the windows boot can access the interenet, we can safely assume it is the linux machine. Now we just need to know what program you are using to access the interenet. In a terminal/console type "knetworkmanager" and let us know the results.
