locked out of adept

I just installed Kubuntu 7.4. I then downloaded firefox without problems. I then tried to add Java and some security updates and adept crashed. When I try to invoke adept now I get a message that some program probably part of adept is active and accessing a database. This remains constant even when I shut down the computer for 4 hours.

How do I find and excise this interfering program?

try running

ksysguard

in the console
and if you see any Adept, apt or aptitude there, kill it
