default program to open a file?

How do I set the default program to open a file. ie, I want kmplayer to open all movie types, but mplayer opens if I click on the move file. Ive tried the "open with" and the check box to make it default, but it doesn't make it default.

Let me add: Konqueror -> Settings -> Configure Konqueror -> File Associations.

Thank you... this is one to print and add to my notes book.
