    VMware From "The Other Side"

I have gotten so used to Kubuntu, so much so, that I hate XP. I have to use XP at work.
I have installed VMware Player on my work's computer, and I now need a Kubuntu 7.04 empty VMware file to install the OS from. UnicornRider has done some from the other way around, can anyone tell me how to get it so I can run Kubuntu at work (I plan on using rdesktop to connect to the server. remote destop inside a VM is a bit conveluted, but still seems better then using XP all day)

Do you mean this? "Kubuntu 7.0.4 Desktop Virtual Machine (i386)" at http://www.vmware.com/vmtn/appliances/directory/902

I saw that there. Actually, what I am looking for is an empty file that I can install into. That one is over 500MB. Basically what I want is a file that just boots the live CD and lets me install, I'm thinking it'd be more along the lines of 0.5MB.

          Sweet!
Doesn't work though, it can't find my FDD or HDD or CD/DVD
In the process of trying to find a way to configure it I found a website that does fantastic (poorly standardized) vmx files with a few button clicks.

I gotta say too, VMware is faster than Parallels.

Very true in my experience too. UnicornRider helped me get a VM Player working on my Feisty system, in which I have a Win XP virtual machine to run a large genealogy database that is an MS Visual FoxPro application. It is a huge resource hog -- all processor I/O intensive. I benchmarked a "file verify integrity" routine in both Win4Lin and VM Player. VM Player is 15% faster.

The VM Player Win XP machine runs in a 1280 x 1024 window on my 1600 x 1200 Kubuntu desktop -- it is beautiful.

Better yet, yesterday I finally figured out how to get my Motorola Razr cell phone to connect to the Motorola Phone Tools application in the Win XP machine, via USB cable. Now THAT is sweet!

Ooops - might be a result of the fact that I created the files on a Linux host (?).

Has anyone tried VirtualBox. I am curious because Automatix has it as an option, but not VMware, just wondering if there is a good reason for that?

Maybe because VirtualBox is open source?

Well, there is also a propietary version with some add-ons, but free to distribute and use for "personal use" (using the biggest definition of personal use that I have seen, BTW, using it for work is OK), but the core is OSS, based on Qemu. I'm using it and quite happy. It's also easier to install than VMWare, you just need to reinstall it when you upgrade your kernel.

It's less featured of course, but has everything that I need. Extra points scored for RDP access to virtual machines.

                    Just a quick comparative note.

I tried VMware and found it difficult to configure. UnicornRider helped me a lot and I got it working OK eventually. Then I tried VirtualBox and found it a breeze (provided you follow the instructions in their manual, and add the Guest Additions for mouse and keyboard integration). I'm running (very occasionally) WinXP in full-screen mode (1280*1024) in VirtualBox in Feisty. I find it seems to configure sound and USB connections very well. Also, as mentioned above, it's easy to update - and of course you can keep backup Snapshots and recover from any disasters in about 30 seconds.

There seems to be a lot of people helped by this guy. I highly recommend visiting his web site and dropping a donation.
