    hard drive image?

    Hi,

It might be that I have to change laptops. As I don't feel like setting up my whole Kubuntu system again, my colleague suggested to take an image of my hard drive. Would this be a good idea? Or will I most likely have to reinstall everything?

Just give (e.g.) "clone-copying" (man dd) a try - if that failed, you could still install from scratch

Your hardware will probably be different on the new machine. Therefore many of your files will need to be different. Rather than attempting to clone the old drive, I would make (b or g)zipped tar files of my /home and /etc directory trees. They probably won't exceed a gig or two, so you can easily store them on a removable drive, if you have one. If you don't, just make tarfiles of subdivisions of those trees. Then, when you get your new system, install from your Kubuntu iso and then extract the tar files, to restore your tweaks and your "stuff".
