Then start a Konqueror (if it isn't open already). Navigate to your /etc/X11 directory. Right click on "xorg.conf". Left click on "Edit as root". Enter your password when requested. find the line that says Driver "nv" in the Device section that has the name of your video card (which should be "nvidia- something") Change the driver line to "nvidia". Save the file. Your old /etc/X11/xorg.conf file will still be there under the name "xorg.conf~", just in case you misspelled nvidia.

    Do NOT TRY Envy! Do NOT install "nvidia-settings" or nvidia-xconfig". These are snares and delusions tempting you to stray from the path of Linux happiness. They will only confuse you and get you in trouble.
    nvidia-settings and nvidia-xconfig are part of the nvidia-glx drivers. I have both boxes at home using them and 40 at work. I guess I am lucky I install the drivers and they work....

        @mfburgo:
        and 40 at work
        Pros tend to forget the tribulations of new users who are attempting to get their first Linux box to work after years of having pros install windoze for them. Sometimes the simplistic approach is best for someone who is having trouble with dpkg-reconfigure. Also both "nvidia-settings" and "nvidia-xconfig" are separate packages that are NOT installed as part of the nvidia-glx-* package. Nvidia-settings is suggested, but personally, I have several boxes with nvidia cards and I've never missed them.

        @dibl: I was trying for Elmer Gantry. He'd never burn feathers!

          dibl, actually if you read into the actual package with the new nvidia nvidia-settings and xconfig are in the package. the existing seperate packages are for the legacy packages. In feisty I almost made the mistake of installing those packages until I did some reading on the subject., and yes so of us that have been working with linux for over ten years do sometimes forget that for the beginner it is a lot harder to do something we have done many times in the past. But also remember that everyone has to start some where and will only become comfortable over time and with experience.......Biggest problem with this gents system seems that the nvidia driver is not getting entered into the xorg.conf file. that is what the reconfigure does.......so I recommended that over trying to edit the file by hand which would be more complicated for him...

            Yep, I understand all that, as well as askrieger's appeal to the Linux ideal of using the repository packages only.

            Being a recent adopter of Linux, I have a keen awareness of the pragmatic need of the new adopter, coming from Windows World -- "just make it work, fast". If we don't get a new adopter productive pretty quickly, we lose them. When I started with Kubuntu 6 months ago, I used Automatix, I used any schlock means that I could find to steer clear of the CLI and get a GUI system that would function as I needed. Linux is not a religion. It is not helpful to try to "convert" people, generally. What is helpful is to get them a GUI desktop with apps that work for them. Later, they can absorb and begin to appreciate the "value proposition" of open source software and "free" as understood by the free software community. But they'll never get to that point with a broken computer. Thus, I recommend Envy to get the Nvidia card installed -- it is pretty effective for 95% of cases, and does the back-room dirty work of detecting and deleting the junk that the poor fellow previously attempted to install. Once he's productive and enjoying his system, there will be an opportunity to explain the benefits of the packaged driver. Personally, I'm using nvidia-glx-new on my Kubuntu 32-bit generic machine, but Envy works better on my Ubuntu 64-bit low-latency system for some reason. Same hardware, same Nvidia driver running the display -- go figure!

              OK, do you mean "linux-restricted-module"? How do I find out what my kernel is?

              EDIT: Wow, thanks! I figured out what you were saying. It even automatically changed my resolution to 1280x1024!
