Questions about:Resolution, Sound Volume, Mouse Cursor, Speed, etc. SOLVED

EDIT: All of these questions are solved (I think) except maybe the last one. THANKS!

Ok, I just installed Kubuntu and I'm completely new to Linux. I have a few questions. I've been searching (the forum and google) and I can't seem to find a solution to these questions.

Q1: If I try to change my resolution, the maximum option is 800x600. I've searched, and I keep finding different things that people say to do and I'm kinda confused... I think you have to do something with this file called xorg.conf. I opened the file in some text editor to look at it, and it has references to 1280x1024 (Resolution I want), but it won't let me select 1280x1024 in the system settings. What should I do?

SOLVED Q2: Every time I boot up, NumLock is turned off. Is there a way to make it automatically turn on when the computer turns on? (Didn't do a search on this one yet, but as long as I'm posting, I thought I might as well ask)

Q3: I can't seem to get my sound volume right. I have buttons on my keyboard to turn the volume up/down, but they don't work very well in Kubuntu. If I press Volume+ (on my keyboard), it shows a small window for a second that says Volume 10%. If I hit Volume+ more, it just stays at 10%. If I press Volume-, it jumps down to 0%. How would I make it so that I can press Volume+/- and have it so that it goes up/down by 1% each time I press it? (I tried to search for this one, but I wasn't sure what terms to search for, and the stuff I got was irrelevant.)

SOLVED Q4: How do I make it so my clock isn't military time?

NEW: Q5: If I ever log off, then log back on, the mouse cursor disappears until I restart. This is really annoying, how would I fix it?

NEW: Q6: I just downloaded supertux and it runs very slowly on my computer. Its fps is so low that I cannot even select an option on the main menu. Also, Euphioa (or something) and Flux and a few other screensavers run at about 5fps. They run full speed on someone else's computer that has much lower system specs. Anyway here are my system specs. AMD Athlon 64 3800+ ~2.4GHz, 1GB DDR RAM, Integrated GeForce 6150LE ~256MB

NEW: Q7: When I search, I see all the complicated ways to install Beryl Window Manager. I looked in adept manager, and there are beryl downloads. Can I just click beryl there and install it that way? Will Beryl run slow? (See Q6)

    Thanks, please help!

Have you install nvidia-glx and configured this will correct this

above will also correct this problem

once you get nvidia installed q6 should be fixed and then you can install beryl with apt-get or adept their are some additional items you need to do but get nvidia installed and working properly before going there

          Thanks, please help!

Re: Questions about: Resolution, Sound Volume, Mouse Cursor, Speed, Beryl

I'm not sure what you mean by "downloaded supertux" (I don't even know what supertux is). HOWEVER, the new user is cautioned to NOT download things willy-nilly (like you used to do with Windows), and expect success with your Linux system. Kubuntu is a Debian Linux distribution and requires "packaged applications", "package" being the operative word. You need to stick with packages that are in the repositories, until you have studied up on how to identify a suitable package from somewhere else, and how to install such a Debian package on your system.

On Beryl, you to need to first get your display driver and screen resolution and refresh set the way you want them -- resolve any and all display issues BEFORE you inflict Beryl on your system and yourself.

OK, OK, the answer is "YES", if you will select just the two packages "Beryl" and "Beryl Manager" for installation from Adept, we'll see what happens ...

p.s. mfburgo gives good advice, and faster too! :P

SuperTux is a super mario like game where you play as Tux (linux penguin guy)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supertux (I'm not downloading random things, I googled it etc. first. So far I've only downloaded firefox gimp and supertux :P )

Anyway, it sounds like I'm supposed to install NVIDIA drivers. Should I follow these instructions?

Good job doing your own research!

But no, I recommend Envy, because when the next kernel upgrade breaks your GUI, you will be able to type
                Code:
                sudo envy -t
at the command line (which is all you'll have), and it will put you back in business with your GUI. Here's where you get Envy -- follow all instructions completely:

these are all in the ubuntu repositories. I hope you mean that your using adept_manager or apt-get to install them.

Download to everyone here means you got it from the maintainers site.

Installed means you used the tools provided (adept , apt ) to install them...

mfburgo: I used Konsole to get those programs. I did something like sudo apt-get install firefox gimp. I thought I was downloading them, though? It couldn't have stored all those programs on the CD can it

dibl: Do I do something like sudo apt-get install envy or do I actually download it from the link you gave me?

Also, the sound problem is very annoying. Anyone know how to fix it? At 0% there is no sound and at 10% (10, not 100) it blasts my ears out. I want it to go up/down by 1% (faster if I hold it).

That is the correct way to install a program. apt-get is the utility to use.

sound problem dont use the keys on the keyboard. Use the speaker icon in the task bar. or kmix.....I haven't found a way to correct my keyboard either ( i really haven't looked.....)

dibl can help you with envy. I just install the nvidia-glx package and configure it....

Heh heh heh ... first I cautioned you about downloading, then I pointed you to a download site to get Envy -- are you spinning yet?

You could use nvidia-glx-new, as mfburgo suggests. Why don't you try that first? Mark it for installation in Adept Manager -- do NOT mark any other nvidia packages, only nvidia-glx-new, and then click "Apply" and let's see what happens. I'll cross my fingers and toes !!

OK, I installed it. Nothing happened. I guess I have to reboot. I'll go reboot after this post.

Anyway, as for the volume problem: If I use that icon, I can set it to anywhere between 10% and 100%. But... 10% is already too loud, I would like to be able to set it to like 5%

EDIT: I rebooted, and didn't see any difference. I tried a screensavers to see if they ran any faster, but now, nothing appears (on the screensaver). Just a black screen. Now what do I do? Should I go back to adept and un-install it?

I was gonna download "Envy" but should I download "Unstable Release" or "Stable Release"? I think I should go with stable, but... I don't really know what I'm doing.

When you click on the little speaker icon in the system tray, you get a single slider, but you also get the chance to click on a button that says "mixer". That gives a whole bunch of sliders and switches to fool around with. You should be able to reduce your volume to a reasonable range with one of them. The real problem is losing sound entirely, while fooling around with all the sliders. Make small changes, one control at a time (AND READ THE KMIX HANDBOOK, FIRST, he pleaded, in vain).
