    Re: Cannot play video

New development. I downloaded VLC player and movie's seem to work fine. I find it odd that the other player's can't play. Perhaps I'm missing a rather vital driver? Can't find any libdvdcss2 or win32 codecs (although win32 does turn up some vaguely related files, most pointing towards programming C++ with debian, and another indicating it does not contain win32 codecs but is a plugin for them).

Are you at right directory ?

You could use konqueror to open packed archives. Click (or double click) cn_cx700-cn800xorg40071-kernel-src_20061107a.tgz and Ark (KDE Archiving tool) should open.

VLC is a good media player (as kaffeine(xine) and mplayer).

        Re: Cannot play video

Right, so. I've figured out the whole medibuntu repository thing (thank you by the way), and am in the process of getting those all worked out.

But back to the custom installation of the VIA drivers. I've gotten past unpacking the .tgz file and ran into a roadblock at ./makedriver and ldconfig. For some reason the ./makedriver command gives the following errors.
        Code:
        tuatha@tuatha-desktop:~$ cd CN_CX700-CN800XORG40071-kernel-src_20061107a/src/

              Back to trying it again.

I switched all the instances of 2.6.17-10 to 2.6.20-16, attempted sudo ./makedriver, success. So, too, with sudo ldconfig (I assume. There was no text. I then navigated to /CN_CX700-CN800XORG40071 and attempted sudo ./vinstall_2D and received this message.

              Code:
              tuatha@tuatha-desktop:/CN_CX700-CN800XORG40071$ sudo ./vinstall_2D

Now start to install VIA/S3G display utility...

Warning, system cannot find the /usr/X11R6/lib/libXv.so.1.0 file.
You can find the package in the installation CD.

Abort, the utility is not installed.

                  Re: Cannot play video

Checked for libxv1 and libxv-dev, both present and accounted for (according to Adept).

I also switched all relevant instances of Ubuntu to their current versions.

Created the symlink and it seemed to proceed just fine, with the exception of being unable to locate a certain file before (I'll post the code when I get back to my computer tonight I think it was something like this:
                  Code:
cp: cannot create regular file `/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers’: No such file or directory
... but slightly different in the name of the file. Attempted the restart to no avail, same problem as before when I tried booting with the Via or Unichrome drivers.

Have yet to attempt sudo rm /usr/X11R6/lib/libXv.so.1.0

                    From Julia 13-3-2007

                    Oh, so close!

My Ubuntu version is 2.6.17-11, so I changed the two references to 2.6.17-10 in makefile. It appeared to work and make the driver.
Then I moved to CN_CX700-CN800XORG40071 and changed the same reference (only one) in install_2D.
Now, when I try to run install_2D I get:

cp: cannot create regular file `/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers’: No such file or directory
Now start to install VIA/S3G display utility…

Warning, system cannot find the /usr/X11R6/lib/libXv.so.1.0 file.
You can find the package in the installation CD
                    and

                    updating my previous message…

I got past the first error by creating the modules directory it was looking for, and it put file called “drivers” in it when I tried again to install.
Hmm - There is differences between kubuntu versions:
                    Feisty (clean install ) don't have /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers

                    BUT

                    Dapper (upgraded hoary>breezy>dapper) has /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers

You could try to make /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers

I had a silly thought while I was waiting for a reply from the folks at Via Arena. I was browsing the Via Arena site and decided to do a search for a driver supporting Ubuntu Linux and the P4M800Pro integrated graphics and instead of the CX700 drivers page, it directed me to a different page:
                              http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx...0&SubCatID=150

Should I be trying this instead?
