    Cannot play video

    Help, assist, aid! Hehe, =)

My computer won't play video files of any kind. Mp4, mpeg, avi, mov, and ogm are the formats I've tried so far.

Kaffeine plays ridiculously slow, and give me variant hues of green and purple.
XMMS has no video screen, but I get sound.
Mplayer won't support them (even with plugins I would assume allow support)
And Xine has sound and would otherwise play fine, but the video is sliced horizontally, pixel by pixel, such that it is illegible.

For the most part, the effects are universal from format to format.

    Thanks!

What kind of system do you have ?

Do you have codecs installed ?

    What tells (in the konsole):
    Code:
    :~$ xvinfo

not sure what that means, still trying to learn command script.

Edit: I run Kubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn, and have downloaded a good many codecs. I've lost track of them but to list a few:

        About XVideo:

        From X video extension
        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X_video_extension
he X video extension, often abbreviated as XVideo or Xv, is a video output mechanism for the X Window System. Its main use today is to rescale video playback in hardware (namely in the hardware of the graphics card), in order to enlarge a given video or to watch it in full screen mode. Without XVideo, this scaling would have to be done in software, which is possible but requires a considerable amount of processing power, sometimes to the point of slowing down/degrading the video stream.
        And you wrote:
Kaffeine plays ridiculously slow, and give me variant hues of green and purple.

What kind of hardware (graphics) do you have ?
        Drivers (default/proprietary)?

I think my onboard video chipset is S3 Graphics UniChrome Pro IGP. I'm pretty sure my video driver is vesa (that's what it says when i go to System Settings and view Monitor & Display, but it says the same thing for my graphics card there).

You could try Via display driver.
            xserver-xorg-driver-via:
This driver for the X.Org X server (see xserver-xorg for a further description)
provides support for VIA/S3 CLE266/KM400/K8M800/UniChrome cards, which are
frequently found in low-form-factor VIA motherboards, and in some laptops.

This driver also contains support for XvMC, the XVideo Motion Compensation
extension. XvMC modules are provided in /usr/lib.
            There is also:
            xserver-xorg-video-unichrome
This driver for the X.Org X server (see xserver-xorg for a further description)
provides support for various VIA UniChrome cards, among them: VT3122, VT7205,
            VT3108, VT3118, VT3344, VT3157, VT3230 and VT3343.

This driver is originally shipped to be loaded as 'via' on xorg.conf, but this
package renames it to 'unichrome', so it doesn't conflicts with the other VIA
            driver already available on Ubuntu.

            #1 Backup /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

#2 Edit xorg.conf with text editor.
Find text vesa and replace it with via. Should be in the Section "Device"
            Driver "vesa" -> Driver "via"

            #3 Restart.

xserver-xorg-driver-via seems to have changed to xserver-xorg-driver-via according to a message that I get when I try
              Code:
              sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-driver-via
which was already installed. So I switched it to xserver-xorg-driver-unichrome (it automatically uninstalls xserver-xorg-video-via with install of unichrome) and restarted my computer. Still no luck.

But when I attempt to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf with Kate or Kwrite (after creating a backup), it gives me this message.
The document could not be saved, as it was not possible to write to file:///etc/X11/xorg.conf.
Check that you have write access to this file or that enough disk space is available.
How do I get around this?

I don't wish to sound rude but did you try to do the edit as root? I note you did the install as root but you must sudo again to do the edit.
                Ignore this if you did.

Yes, there is 30+ xserver-xorg-driver-something installed. xorg.conf activates them -> Driver "via" .

Try: Alt + F2 (KDE shortcut) and kdesu kate /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Thank goodness for that backup file.

First attempted by switching vesa to via. Then unichrome. The reinstalling xserver-xorg-video-via (as opposed to unichrome) and trying it again as via.

No dice. Seems like the only thing that works is vesa. Is the device itself somehow faulty, or just unique in that it doesn't recognize the 'via' or 'unichrome' drivers?

I'd just like it to be stated that I really appreciate your help.

EDIT: Would it help if I noted that mplayer would play video clips downloaded from the internet?

                      Vesa should always work.

You could check your chipset (CLE266, KM400... or what).

                      Helppers:
In the konsole: lshw (sudo lshw)- list hardware
lshw is a small tool to extract detailed information on the hardware configuration of the machine. It can report exact memory configuration, firmware version, mainboard configuration, CPU version and speed, cache configuration, bus speed, etc. on DMI-capable x86 or IA-64 systems and on some PowerPC machines (PowerMac G4 is known to work).
There is also hardinfo (this is with gui):
                      Displays system information
HardInfo is a small application that displays information about your
hardware and operating system. Currently it knows about PCI, ISA PnP, USB,
IDE, SCSI, Serial and parallel port devices.

                      More to check:
Kubuntu (Linux) keeps many kind of logs. They are in the /var/log/. They are text files.
For xwindow there are Xorg.0.log (current session) and Xorg.0.log.old (previous session). Also: K > System > System Logs Viewer (KSystemLog)

If your chipset is right for via driver:
Start computer with setting: Driver "via"
-> text screen login. There should errors in the Xorg.0.log.

Repair xorg (use backup) -> restart -> Probe Xorg.0.log.old for errors:

                      Errors in the Xorg.0.log.old:
                      Code:
                      :~$ cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old | grep "(EE)"
                      Warnings:
                      Code:
                      :~$ cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old | grep "(WW)"

I noted that mplayer would play video clips downloaded from the internet?
That is good. Maybe mplayer is a bit lighter (or mplayer settings vs xine settings). Here CPU load is higher with kaffeine(xine). CPU Load: K menu > Systems > KDE System Guard (KSysguard).

                          Re: Cannot play video

a-ha VT8237, P4M800PRO => you could try xserver-xorg-video-unichrome and driver "via" in to the xorg.conf

Start and check Xorg.0.log (or Xorg.0.log.old)

If not working (unichrome: provides support for various VIA UniChrome cards, among them: VT3122, VT7205,
                          VT3108, VT3118, VT3344, VT3157, VT3230 and VT3343. - is VT8237 there ?) => then maybe this:

                          How-to: VIA K8M890 Chrome 9 IGP and Linux’s Xorg - Ubuntu Edgy 6.10
                          http://www.hombrepac.com.ar/software...untu-edgy-610/
This tutorial will install the official open source Via drivers for the K8M890 chipset, but will work for all and any of the next:
                          P4M800/CE/Pro UniChrome Pro integrated graphics ( P4M800 P4M800Pro )
                          Before you edit, BACKUP !

Why there are dead links ?

No dice. This one's proving difficult.

                            I have error messages.
                            "VT 3344 not supported yet."
                            "No devices detected."

                            And warning message seems unrelated.
"The directory "/usr/share/fonts/X11/cyrillic" does not exist."

I'm checking the link you sent me now. Will it work for Feisty as well?

EDIT: Tried doing the tuturial you sent me. But I have no idea how to handle .tgz files. I downloaded the file from via and tried inputting the command into konsole but I get this.
                            Code:
                            tuatha@tuatha-desktop:~$ tar zxvf cn_cx700-cn800xorg40071-kernel-src_20061107a.tgz
tar: cn_cx700-cn800xorg40071-kernel-src_20061107a.tgz: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
                            tar: Child returned status 2
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors
I double checked the file name to make sure it was right.

In your earlier post, you listed out some of the codecs that you have downloaded, but I did not see libdvdcss2 or w32codecs. Do you have those also? If I recall, they are needed to help run some formats on MPlayer and possibly xine. If you don't have them, you should be able to get them from the mediubuntu repository. Here is the link to the website for medibuntu:

                              http://medibuntu.sos-sts.com/

Just click on the Repository Howto to get the instructions on how to add the repository to sources.list.
