Have you tried Snowhog's suggestion of doing an install with the USB storage device attached (and live)?

I think one of the very first installations I did, probably of Ubuntu, I did with them plugged in (my external disk drive was always on during my Windows era) and still had the problem. However, I upgraded to Feisty last night and the problem has been solved. It also solved another couple of minor issues I had, including a problem with APIC. Now I'm trying to sort out Compiz. Kudos to you all for helping me out. Thanks!
