    problem with "su" command

Hi there, as my name suggests I'm a bit of a noob to linux, but I'm eager to learn.

Anyhow, to install something I need to be superuser so I go and type "su" as I used to do in SuSE 10.0 about a year ago.

It asks me for a password, so I go and type mine (the only password I have specified so far), and I get this:
    su: Authentication failure
    Sorry.

I also tried not typing a password and just pressing enter to no avail.

How do I find out the correct password?

    You'll have to either

    - revert to Ubuntu's way of sudo(ing)

    or

    - restore the traditional root account.
