Windows can't see Kubuntu

On my Kubuntu machine, I have Samba server installed. I can run kdesu kcontrol and work with the options in the Internet & Network > Samba tab. I selected Share security level and set up a couple of shares.

Unfortunately, the Kubuntu box doesn't appear in the Network window (Vista) or My Network Places (XP). I can ping the Kubuntu box successfully, and Kubunto can see and work with the Windows shares no problem.

Suggestions?

What 'flavor' of Vista are you running? If it is Home Premium, you are not going to be able to see the linux PC as an item within your Windows network scheme. This is due to an issue within Win Vista Home Premium and the security it uses.

Thanks for that. However, I had already changed the LAN Manager authentical level to "Send LM & NTLM - Use NTLMv2 Session Security If Negotiated" because with the default level I couldn't connect to the shares on my Mac.

I tried running smbclient –L localhost on the Kubuntu box, and I received the following error:

Error connecting to 127.0.0.1 (Connection refused)
Connection to localhost failed

Ideas?

Connection refused

Make sure both smbd and nmbd are "up"

[sudo] ps ax | grep 'mbd'

and that the server is configured properly

[sudo] testparm
