    Konqueror vs. Firefox

I'm very new to Ubuntu / Kubuntu, and just today made my first Kubuntu LiveCD. I have been using Firefox for a while on Win XP. Having just started up Kubuntu for the first time, I was surprised to find an unfamiliar (to me) web browser ... this Konqueror guy. I'm using it now and see no major differences or annoyances, but I was concerned that Firefox may have the larger share of open source developers adding nifty extensions.

Is this the case? I haven't spent much time becoming a power user of Firefox, but I have recently become motivated to do so. So ... I'm basically asking for a sales pitch on the benefits of Konqueror over Firefox.

Would I be an uncool Kubuntu user if I didn't use Konqueror (which is, of course, the more important point)?

    Thanks,
    Brian

P.S. It's a bit funny that 'Kubuntu' is not recognized by the spell checker in Konqueror.

Konqueror is designed to appeal to the small (but elite) KDE afficionado group of Linux users, while Firefox is for -- uh, the masses? Is that politically correct?

In any event, Linux is about freedom, so you can freely use one or both or something else entirely, with a clear conscience. 8)

Personally, I use Ff for the extensions. Konqueror, which is also your file manager, is installed by default. The Konqueror rendering engine is also used by Apple in their Safari browser. Most websites look and work the same in both Firefox and Konqueror. The only problem you might encounter, is websites that check the browser ID string (like banks and online stores) may not have heard of Konq. Fortunately, Konqueror allows you configure its ID string for particular sites as needed.

Go look at add-ons.mozilla.org. Firefox has far and away more extensions than Konqueror.

However, these are goodies that most people don't use. Some of the best Firefox add-ons are built into Konqueror (such as Adblock).

There's a really good article about this here:
        http://community.linux.com/community.../1957219.shtml

Just install both and see which one you wind up liking more.

Congratulations! You've taken the first step into a bigger world ;-) Personally, I still use Firefox as my web browser. Konqueror is slow on my machine, which would probably be easy to fix, but I've just got used to Firefox. However, you'll soon discover that Konqueror can do much more than surfing the web and displaying your offline files. It is a really cool multipurpose tool.

There's no such thing as an uncool *ubuntu user IMHO. Once you've found the courage to leave the MassSheep OS behind you and discover Linux, which is technically way above the other one, but where you have to think more and "work" more yourself, that's already extremely cool, don't worry about it.

          That's a nice one ;-)

            Thanks for the replies.

Now I just need to get Kubuntu installed and bootable from my USB portable drive.

I'm planning to use konqueror only as a file manager, unless these bugs are fixed

Bug 135230, has a trivial solution. Go to this web page. Follow the instructions there. Using either the addresses of the OpenDNS servers or your ISP's servers.

I use both Konqueror and FireFox, both has pros and cons.

By default, Konqueror starts up faster and runs faster, so if I'm viewing something simple, such as html pages on local computer, I use Konqueror (Konqueror is more integrated with KDE).

For the complexcity, I use FireFox+Noscript, FireFox is slower than Konqueror without the NoScript, but with NoScript extensions installed, FireFox become much faster. Still, it takes too long to start the FireFox, so if I want something simple I will use Konqueror.

                    My $0.02 worth on Konquror...

Konquror is faster and loads quicker. It surfs the net, network, and my hard drive quickly. Most of all, I love the saved profiles.

I have a profile for school. Activating this profile loads up a ton of webpage pertaining to my school e-mail, WebCT, Dictionary, And Wikipedia etc.

And I have my basic profile that loads my personal webmail, this forum, google, and other forums I like to keep up to date on.

I think that saved profiles is the coolest thing. And it saves me alot of time in loading webpages and getting done all that I need done online. I just load the profile and get up for a cup of coffee. When I sit back down, all of my desired webpages are up. I don't know if other browsers have profiles. I know IE don't.

One problem with Konq is that it crashes sometimes when I access my online Yahoo e-mail, SOMETIMES. This is the only place I've had it crash. So for this ONE occurance I need another browser.

                      Re: Konqueror vs. Firefox

I use Konqueror because it is a KDE application.

Being a recent convert from XP, it might be odd that I set up my desktop to have a menu bar on the top of my screen similar to OSX. But, I think it is a better idea. All KDE applications use the same menu now, including Konqueror.

Firefox uses it's own menu, along with OpenOffice. So I am getting to know KOffice now, too, because of the same reason.

I really, REALLY like KDE applications.

                        Hi,

                        @gehentogo
I'm not quite following you - why should it be odd that you have sth. similar to OS.S (Mac) because you switched over from XP (MS-bull-windows)?

Does Firefox also have this profiles feature that Ant2ne mentions for Konq? If not, I'd consider switching - sounds extremely cool if you need the browser for completely different "work-complexes" that you don't want to mix. My Konqueror is still a LOT slower than Firefox, but I've already seen more than one post suggesting the easy solutions to that, should not be a problem.
As I already know and use a few of Konq's features - browsing files, viewing .jpg and .pdf, listening to music, ripping CDs - I'd like to incorporate web browsing, too. Long live King Konq 8)

                        Regards,

                        runtime_error

Actually, there is a way of making Firefox store at least one (and, possibly more) browsing profiles. My fox opens with my favorite websites opened on a customary set of tabs. Unfortunately, I can't tell you how to do it. I believe it was some about:config hack that I read about somewhere, immediately tried, and just as promptly forgot to write down.

                              Thanks, UnicornRider!

I'll have a look into that as soon as I find the time. I don't know which would be easier - chewing on these tweaks to Firefox or just getting my Konqueror up and running as a web browser. Well, let's see.
