    Special Characters Problems

i did a search and found out how i can type accented characters like á à ä and things like that. but sometimes i need characters like ǎ ě ǐ ǒ ǔ ǚ ā ē ī ō ū ǖ etc as used in Chinese pin yin. how do i get that?? is it possible for me to manually configure which key + which keys = which characters? and is there a "Character Map" equivalent in Kubuntu?

another problem is that i have these accented characters in some of my files and they are displayed as boxes. those files were created and named when i was in Windoze and now sits in my external harddrive. to find out more about this problem, i created a file in Kubuntu and typed accented characters as its file name and it displayed fine. so, how do i make these files display the characters properly?

yet another question is how do i type chinese characters using pinyin input? i've installed the chinese language in the "Regional & Language" in "System Settings" but can't get the Chinese Keyboard layout. a search around showed that other people use SKIM or SCIM to do that. i got both programs after i installed the chinese language but i don't know how to use it. is it compulsory for me to use SKIM or SCIM? can't i just get the keyboard layut to appear in "regional & language" and use it like the Language Bar in Windoze?

There is a Character Map. If it doesn't already appear under KMenu>Utilities>Character Map then use the command
    sudo apt-get install charmap.app
Are you using Feisty? Look under KMenu>Settings> SCIM Input Method Setup

If you're using Feisty, you should already have SKIM, the KDE version of SCIM (the Smart Common Input Method) installed. You should probably also install the "skim-scim-pinyin" package. If you're using an earlier version of Kubuntu, upgrade to Feisty. The handling of East Asian locales has improved enormously.

yes, i'm using Fiesty. i've both SKIM and SCIM. and i looked at their documentation on their website. unfortunately, it's not completed yet. i still don't know how to configure and use those softwares.
