i did a search and found out how i can type accented characters like á à ä and things like that. but sometimes i need characters like ǎ ě ǐ ǒ ǔ ǚ ā ē ī ō ū ǖ etc as used in Chinese pin yin. how do i get that?? is it possible for me to manually configure which key + which keys = which characters? and is there a "Character Map" equivalent in Kubuntu?
another problem is that i have these accented characters in some of my files and they are displayed as boxes. those files were created and named when i was in Windoze and now sits in my external harddrive. to find out more about this problem, i created a file in Kubuntu and typed accented characters as its file name and it displayed fine. so, how do i make these files display the characters properly?
yet another question is how do i type chinese characters using pinyin input? i've installed the chinese language in the "Regional & Language" in "System Settings" but can't get the Chinese Keyboard layout. a search around showed that other people use SKIM or SCIM to do that. i got both programs after i installed the chinese language but i don't know how to use it. is it compulsory for me to use SKIM or SCIM? can't i just get the keyboard layut to appear in "regional & language" and use it like the Language Bar in Windoze?
